Both. Low stakes and for fun, poker can relieve stress. High stakes or poor bankroll control, it usually increases it.

It can do both, depending on how and why you play. For some people, poker relieves stress by offering focus, challenge, and a mental escape, especially when played casually with good bankroll control. For others, it increases stress due to variance, bad beats, financial pressure, or emotional attachment to results. Poker tends to amplify your mindset—if you’re calm and disciplined, it can be enjoyable and engaging; if you’re anxious or chasing outcomes, it quickly becomes stressful. Managing expectations and knowing when to stop are key to keeping poker on the healthy side.

Ideally poker should decrease the stress, but after a few bad beats it will increase it anyway.
It's more the adrenaline, which will definitely increase whether you play or not, but I don't think anyone has ever become less stressed because of poker.

Poker doesn't stress me, on the contrary, it can sometimes be irritating and 😥 or extremely wonderful and fun 🤑. The most important thing is not to fall into the badbeat trap.

I think that before starting to play poker, we should look for ways to solve our personal problems, because the game forces us to concentrate, to make the right decisions. It actually relieves our stress.

If you just look at it as a form of relaxation, the stress is very minimal, at most one unlucky hand will pull you up a little! If you look at it as a source of income, it can be much more stressful and frustrating, even if every single game 🤔

Definitely increases stress if you’re chasing losses, multi tabling too much, or letting variance and bad beats get to you.

It depends how I have played haha. Sometimes after big wins its hard to get sleep. I think stress causes that...

Personally I don't notice the stress, but then I play to occupy time. Stress linked to the outcome is not taken to the next hand or game

Personally I take the emotion out of poker so it’s not stressful it’s more of a journey. You just have the play the cards and your competition even minded. You can’t get to high or two low just focus on the next play. If you bust you bust, lucky you always have another tournment but if you play sound you end up cashing a lot more

I would say that it stresses me out more than it relaxes me, but it's a way to disconnect from trivial everyday problems without necessarily having to talk to someone

When I play casually or with a clear plan, poker actually relieves stress. The focus on decision-making pulls my mind away from daily worries, and I enjoy the problem-solving aspect. Making a good fold or a solid value bet feels rewarding, even if the result doesn’t always go my way.

On the other hand, poker increases stress when expectations get too high or bankroll management slips. Variance can be brutal — knowing you played correctly and still lost can be frustrating. Tilt usually shows up when emotions take control instead of logic.

So for me, poker is stress-relief as long as:

  • I’m properly bankrolled
  • I focus on decisions, not short-term results
  • I’m ready to quit a session when emotions creep in
Used the right way, poker is challenging and fun. Used the wrong way, it can definitely become stressful.

It can do both, depending on the situation.
For some players, poker is relaxing because it’s a strategic game that keeps the mind engaged.
But during big swings, bad beats, or long sessions, it can definitely increase stress.
A lot depends on mindset, bankroll management, and emotional control.

When played with balance and discipline, it can be enjoyable rather than stressful.

It depends on the stakes! If I’m playing a $2 tournament for fun, it’s relaxing. If I’m playing at the top of my bankroll and the bubble is approaching, my heart rate is through the roof. The trick is to play at a level where the money doesn't make you lose your cool.

I think most players can see themselves somewhere in both columns.
I've personally experienced both sides of this.
Poker as stress relief — absolutely real. There's something almost meditative about being completely locked into a hand. When I'm deep in a tournament, genuinely focused, the rest of the world just disappears. Work problems, daily stress, whatever is bothering me — none of it exists at that moment. That feeling is hard to find anywhere else.
But the stress side is equally real and I think people don't talk about it enough.
The variance point hits hardest for me. Making the perfect decision and still losing is something that never fully gets comfortable. You can understand it mathematically and still feel it emotionally. Those are two different things.
The tilt cycle is also brutally accurate. You get tired, make a small mistake, get frustrated, make a bigger mistake, get more frustrated. Before you know it you've lost two buy-ins and you're not even sure how it happened.
I think the key difference between recreational and competitive use is honestly self-awareness. Knowing why you're sitting down at the table that day. Is it because you're in a good headspace and ready to play your best? Or is it because you had a bad day and want to escape?
Those two reasons lead to very different sessions.
Poker is a mirror. It shows you exactly who you are that day — whether you like it or not.

It all depends on the purpose of the game... If you just drive like that, it's a vacation, but seriously, it depends on your mood and motivation...)))

If you play on a professional level, then of course it's a lot of stress.
