I completely agree poker can be both a lifestyle and a career, but it demands balance. The game is intense, and it’s easy to let sessions, study, or travel spill over into personal life. For me, the key is setting boundaries: dedicated time for family, breaks after long sessions, and clear limits on when and how much I play. I’ve had moments where poker tension or focus created minor friction at home, but keeping open communication and prioritizing family helps prevent serious issues. Without that separation, the game can quickly start costing more than it gives.

It never got to that point. But there was a time when he was sleeping about 3 hours a day because he was staying up all night playing poker.

Yes, it can definitely affect family life sometimes.

Long MTT sessions can take many hours, which means less time with family.
There are also moments when you win a satellite ticket and plan to play the target tournament, but suddenly family plans like an outing come up.

In those situations it can be difficult, because the tournament is usually a must-play opportunity.
So balancing poker time and family commitments becomes very important.

You've touched on something that doesn't get discussed enough in poker communities. We talk a lot about strategy, bankroll management and variance — but rarely about the human cost of the game.
I think you're absolutely right. Poker can be incredibly rewarding — mentally, financially, and even socially. But it has a way of consuming you if you're not careful. The highs pull you in, and the losses make you want to 'fix' things at the table instead of stepping away.
Personally, I haven't had serious family conflicts because of poker, but I've definitely felt the tension. Those moments when you're physically present at dinner but mentally still replaying a hand you lost. Or when a bad session puts you in a mood that affects everyone around you. It's subtle, but it's real.
The separation you're talking about is easier said than done — especially for those who play seriously. But I think the key is setting clear boundaries before the problems start, not after. Dedicated playing hours, honest conversations with family about what poker means to you, and knowing when to close the laptop.
Poker teaches you discipline at the table. The real challenge is applying that same discipline to the rest of your life.

Everyone needs to separate their personal and professional life, if poker is just a hobby for you, this is another reason to separate.

No, poker does not affect my family life. I would never allow that to happen. Family should always come first. If poker affects family life, then one needs to reflect and reconsider the desire to continue playing.

Family always comes first.
But then it's easy cuz I'm retired. I have a lot to time to play.
But if poker is a career choice, I have no idea how one can juggle the two.

My husband and I just started playing online and we play together in the TV. We sit and watch the action and play together so I think it’s brought us closer

To avoid problems, I dedicate very little time to poker; I usually play when I'm alone, and only play in person once a week.

"The best thing I did was explain 'variance' to my spouse. Before, they thought a losing session meant I was bad at the game or gambling recklessly.

Not really but yes. We do prayer devotion in our house everyday and sometimes when it's time, I'm usually busy playing poker lol, I can leave my screen, so I just tell them to do it without me sometimes

No, I can separate my personal life well. I even think that doing this is essential to achieve good poker progression.

Since I’m single, I don’t really have many family-related issues when it comes to poker. But no one in my family plays or is really into it. I think people who are married and have kids need to know how to balance the game with family time.

Decreased socialization, such as avoiding commitments or ignoring relationships. If you want a serious relationship, you'll need a lot of discipline in poker. You can't play whenever you want. You can't sleep until noon or nap whenever you want because you stayed up late. You can't skip chores because you have to register late for a tournament.

Yes, poker can definitely affect family life, especially when you have small kids. It’s not really a good idea to play while they’re around - too many distractions and questions - so I only play when they’re asleep or out. You also need to make time for your wife and family responsibilities, which limits poker time a lot. That’s why I prefer turbo tournaments or short sessions, and I don’t play cash games at all.
