Of course it is a sport. Generally a non contact sport. You are battling your wits against many opponents. What is a sport if you are not competing against an opponent?

Chess is considers a sport. It was even part of the Olympics once.

Is it sporting to hurt your opponent deliberately. In many sports like Rugby, no, that would be a foul or sending off as 'unsporting behaviour!' . Boxing, still a sport!

Explain..
I believe that poker is a sport. I think poker is a sport like chess or e-sports. I understand that poker is primarily a game of chance, but that doesn't stop it from having all the characteristic elements of a real sport.

First of all we must define the word "sport".

Personally I consider poker as a sport in the sense that it requires a lot of training and mental preparation.

I don't think poker is a sport, nor a mental sport, because it's a game of luck.

Poker is considered a mind sport by the International Mind Sports Association.
mental exhaustion is reflected in the body in various ways, pressure for results and other factors such as technical skill are the main factors for it to be a sport of the mind.

These days it seems that anything can be whatever you want it to be. Personally, I would never consider anything that doesn't require athleticism and/or physical exertion to be a sport. But, on looking at different definitions of the word 'sport' I could be wrong.

Chess is recognized as a sport, so I have no problem recognizing poker as one, too.

Ultimately, it all comes down to definitions.

Exactly. And I am more in the camp, that the word "sport" should indicate some sort of psysical activity / movement, whereas poker, chess, backgammon etc. should be defined as games. Therefore I also dont think, that either of those belong in the olympics for instance.

if they consider chess a sport, they don't consider poker as well. I believe that to be a sport there must be an audience, prizes, and competition, in poker there is all of this

Would you consider fatigue, endurance and discipline phgsical elemenst? These are the same factors that are major in sports.

If it onvokves any type of fatigue and endurance I would definitely consider it a sport. Thats like some people say Nascar isn't a sport because your just driving. Skill, strategy, endurance, fatigue are all in major sports and if that player lacks any of it they are defiantly having a bad or will have a bad game

Depends on how you see the game.

I hope so
Anyone who considers race car driving as not having a physical stress element is ignorant of the sport -anyone who thinks there is no variance in "physical sports" also does not understand all the aspects of what they are referring too. :geek:

My opinion is that poker is not a sport, it is a card gambling game with a large element of chance.

I'm more inclined to consider poker a sport than a game of chance. I prefer to feel like an athlete rather than a gambler, so for me personally, poker is more of a sport than a game of chance.

It's definitely sport. It is not a sport that requires physical vigor, but it requires a lot of mental as well as chess for example.

There is an element of competition, tournaments are held, there are prizes, the best wins, and there is excitement in almost any other sports competition - why not call poker a sport.
