Best Videos to learn from?

bbiase, I agree. I don't think that he has a centralized location where you can find his videos. On the Red Chip Poker podcast, which he hosts, he frequently says something like, "Just go to YouTube, and search for 'splitsuit'." Most of the results are from the Poker Bank channel, and he also contributes to the Red Chip Poker channel. Also, though live low-stakes* isn't the main type of thing that you (Poker247) were looking for, the co-founder of Red Chip Poker is on Live at the Bike, sometimes. I saw him in a rebroadcast on the LATB twitch channel yesterday, and it was interesting watching a player whose strategy videos I watch, playing live poker, as opposed to online.

*Edit: I guess I should say mid-stakes?

Yes. You probably have to have some good knowledge on game theory concepts to follow SplitSuit, but OTOH, the man leads you through an excellent process of thinking, which most beginners fail to have. If a beginner grows into the mindset of "Ok, I CAN make this call, it's not unprofitable. But WHY should I make this call? How can I make money out of this call? I probably can't put myself in an absolute profitable spot with this hand. Therefore, I should fold.", he is probably NEVER in his life being the fish of the table.

That's probably the right mindset for guys who are in the bussiness with the sole purpose of making money in the long run.

What makes you feel this way?

Personally I just don't see Phil Helmuth giving away his true strategy and tactics. He may give basic advice (which is mainly what I've seen from him), or even advice that "sounds" good but I don't think he would want to give an edge to anyone out there. I am simply basing this off of two things...

1st. His character. Anyone who watches Phil play can tell he is an extremely self centered, tantrum throwing player. People with those characteristics generally ten to be narcissists.
Definition of narcissist (tell me this isn't Phil Helmuth...)

I highlight certain areas I believe truly pertain to Phil Helmuth. Would you really expect someone with fragile self esteem, an extreme need for admiration from others, and zero empathy for others to try and help other people out? He wants admiration, why would he give that away to someone else? You see how he acts when he loses, he does nothing but put the other person down even if they played the hand perfectly. Tends to do this more so to anyone that has not achieved more than him, primarily people like negreanu, hansen, ivey, brunson, etc. I think he respects those people so much he would chop his own finger off to keep/get admiration/respect from them. But as for helping us, the "little" people, he would never imho. You've all seen how he treats people who beat him that aren't of the above listed group....
He even did it to Tom Dwan when he first arrived on the scene...the guy who turned 50 bucks into millions and stuck around for years to come after in a heads up he told him he wouldn't last a year or even maybe months i believe....

I could see negreanu helping more so, but probably more in a 1 on 1 with him, behind closed doors....not in a video for the world to see. I just don't see any of them giving their true strategy or tactics...See if you watch their videos, it's stuff you already know, you just need to work on discipline in my opinion. I like Gus hansen bc he gives little useful tips like the use of the 4/2 rule. I always worked those odds out in my head and never realised it could be that much easier...idk, I evaluate character then generally go to "Okay Ill take advice from this guy"..Mainly why I give Gus Hansen credit...he seems like the guy that just doesn't care. He's like "ahh I've made plenty, Im confident in my abilities to use my tactics better then anyone, so here's some advice" lol

Jguar, thank you for explaining your thoughts so thoroughly, and thank you for elaborating on your initial comment. I understand what you mean. I don't personally prefer to judge a person's character based only on their television personality and without having met them, myself. Literally every pro, semi-pro, and up-and-coming twitch personality that I have heard discuss meeting Phil Hellmuth have described how surprised they were by his kindness and strength of character. While I do not agree that his behavior at the tables is acceptable, it does seem to me that most of the people that he plays with understand that his outbursts are his way of dealing with certain situations, and they seem to laugh it off. Anytime there is backlash against him, it is usually done as a friendly joust or with a teasing smile. If I have ever seen anyone legitimately get upset with Phil, it is someone who has never met him and who seems to be taking too seriously something trite, but their impression of Phil lends them toward animosity.

I don't believe that there is anything wrong with thinking that one is the best. At times, the only way to succeed is to believe that one is the best or that they can become the best. Every basketball player on a court believes that they are the best player out there. If they don't, then they will not find success, because there is a Kobe Bryant or a Michael Jordan or a Gregg Popovich who will not be convinced otherwise and who work harder than any other player or coach to make sure that it stays that way. That is an admirable trait, to me. Great players rarely make great teachers, and there have been studies that show that this is because they are unable to communicate how they do what they do. The better a person gets at what they do, the more difficult it is for them to explain how they do it, because it becomes so second nature and so ingrained in who they are that they forget. Michael Jordan probably shot tens of thousands of free throws in practice. He was so good and so sure of himself that he shot and scored an in-game free throw with his eyes closed. For someone who can perform so naturally, it is difficult to work with someone who is unable to "just do it". It is even more difficult if that less-talented person is unable to work as hard as the Kobes of the world. The reason Kobe gets a bad reputation as a teammate is because he is always going to be the hardest working person on the team, and very few players are able to match his tenacity.

Dealing specifically with the types of "training" videos that Phil Hellmuth and Daniel Negreanu produce, I think that most of the material that they and most pros are associated with is promotional material, rather than personal exploits. I expect these videos to be geared toward a target audience that is more interested in "learning from the pros" in a commercial sense, rather than becoming a student of the game.

I personally think she's kind of a dits lol don't get me wrong there are plenty of good female poker players out there. But generally they worked their way through the ranks...didnt just jump into high stakes bc they had money from acting. This does imho show the brain capacity of some actors and actresses...

I think she's a decent player. I railed her a bit at this past year's wsop in a few events... she seemed competent.
