Which Do You Prefer AK or JJ?

Uhm ... they are both tricky, but only because you act either too tight or aggressive with them. I learned that it might be the wisest to only invest 1BB pre-flop and, depending on how things look from there, either fold or go all-in (but only if there are less than 3 callers left in the hand).

AK or JJ

Definitely JJ it's always better to be guaranteed a pair and hitting one the same for trips as opposed to AK you must hit at least one of them just for a pair though lots of people only play the ace chase version of poker and chances are one of these players will always go all in with even A4 off suit and often beat you.
But JJ all day long. :angel:

Before or After?

My preference depends on the action before the flop

JJ is a fair hand against all-in before the flop
since it will beat all pairs except QKA

If these cards don't come out on or after the flop, as frequently happens,
you will win the all-in when/if other players
only make the lower pairs


(personally, I seldom go all-in pre-flop
except with AA, KK)

I like QKA after the flop because you have the best chance
to catch top pair or better, for the hand

I prefer AK. You know your 50/50 ish at worst angainst everything except AA or KK and have a reasonable chance to hit and be ahead. Also you have a better idea of where you are after the flop. (Either you've hit or you haven't)
With JJ and an overcard comes on the flop, where are you? Do they have it or not and what do you do? I don't like it.

I would say AK

Let's see, I'm sure I've lost and won about the same number of hands with AK vs. JJ since they're both equal in value, almost. JJ has a tiny, teeny edge, but not by much. AK suited switches that edge back, but again not by much.

I have no preference between these two hands. Although the pair has higher preflop equity, it can still lose in the hand. AK may also not get support on the board, although it is considered one of the strongest hands.

Honestly, lately I prefer AK because if I can't form a game on the flop it will be much easier for me to get rid of my cards, instead if they reach my hand JJ and with a flop that could be unfavorable it generates many doubts and sometimes I make the mistake to keep my game and lose.

A made hand preflop always has an edge. But you always have to take into account many other factors, position, number of calls and raises, stack depth ... You can list for a long time, but everything will depend on the specific situation. My choice is 50/50.

I prefer AK but it's always good to be winning before the flop, in situations where I have few blinds I prefer JJ's pair
