Good morning everyone.
I started playing poker at the end of 2018. I mostly played
freerolls and micro-stakes, so I never really went through long periods of variance — at worst, maybe a week without winning. In micro-stakes combined with freerolls, you can still make some money, even if it’s a small amount.
But when it comes to higher stakes, you need to understand that variance is part of the game. Even strong winning players go through it. I watch some top Brazilian players on Twitch; they have millions in lifetime winnings, yet this year one of them is over
$40K down. And he keeps playing multiple tables like nothing happened. Why? Because he knows variance is simply part of poker.
You need to study and understand whether your decisions are correct, and whether what you’re experiencing is just bad luck. Variance is completely normal. Sometimes you play well and lose, sometimes you play average and win. That’s poker.
The real secret is to study and keep practicing. When you do that, you won’t let variance affect you. In the long run — as long as you can actually beat the field at your stake — you will be profitable.
