I think it is a good idea but nothing replaces experience playing and learning! After all, everyone who wrote books did so by playing and learning!

Depends on your learning style and where you're at with your game

If you are on the beginner side then Element of Poker by Tommy Angelo and the Myth of Poker Talent by Alez Fitzgerald are great choice.

If you are more advanced and like technical material then check out Modern Poker Theory by Michael Acevedo and Excelling at No Limit Hold'em (I've even got a chapter in that one)

Investing in education is always worth it, so long as you have the time to go thru the material. There is no real sense in buying courses or books (even if you're getting a great deal price wise) if you won't actually go thru, absorb, and ultimately apply the material.

For the game of poker that I play I would never bother to buy a book about the game. Not worth the output of cash. I find that I learn just enough here on this site to gain some ideas on how to improve my game a little. I am playing just as a pastime and for the fun of it.

Learning poker on your own is very difficult. Poker books are very useful for beginners to understand the basics of poker, but for further training it would be better to hire a coach.
