Slow Play,What Is That Exactly?

Well I'm a beginer and there are some expressions on poker that I don't know yet,and slow play is one of these.I assume that maybe I have to play very slow and let the time bar finish untill the end.(I hope you understand my question) and I'm sorry if I'm wrong or maybe this could be a silly question.

Slow play is when you have the nuts (best hand possible) or close to it and you act like you're weak and just call it down to the river knowing they're going to pay you off then most likely check-raising on the river to max out your take.

It's often considered a slow roll doing so if you have the nuts and you're just Hollywood-ing for no reason and, a lot of players - esp in live play - look down on it. It's not illegal to do, but most don't like it. It's "unsportsmanlike."

Slowplay is not playing your hand aggresive enough and giving the chance to your enemy to make a better hand than yours or just give him the chance to fold his hand without getting value while you can.
Example: flop is 678 with 2 spades and you have 88. V checks to you.
You should always bet, any spade, 4 5 9 or T could give him the winning hand or completly scare him away (if he's got an overpair he will call a bet on the flop but fold alot of turns to agression If he didn't improve)

Slow play is when you dont raise in a hand when you are huge favorite to win. Sometimes slow play will make your opponent bluff you and you will get more money then. Not entirely true - a slow roll is playing slow and making a show of it when you have the perceived best hand, not the absolute nuts. I've seen people live with sets and alike having a person completely dominated but still with the chance of a better hand.

Slow rolling, in general is making a show out of something when you know you have the other person(s) dominated - not the absolute nuts.

I think that slow play is like a trap that you make to the others opponents when you are nuts.

Slowplay is kinda like playing with fire. You under represent your strength and hope your opponent puts in chips in the pot.

You should only do this when you have a strong hand and the board texture is not draw heavy.

Slow play is a kind of play when you have a monster hand (I mean very good hand whether with the board or before the flop like AA KK etc) and you sure that if you bet your opponents more likely will fold but you don't want them to fold, you want to make them pay. So you check a lot , call instead of raising and so on to make your opponents think that you have a weaker hand when actually you don't.

I don't op is only person not knowing what slow play is . Also I think slow roll is another thing many don't understand. They Just know it's suppose to be rude but don't understand exactly what it means. By definition a slow roll is never any thing you do before raising as it comes from turning or "rolling " over your cards. It's really a live poker term and is when you have nuts and wait to show acting like you are beat then HA. I have great hand. Waiting to call an allin when you have nuts is similar. I once had a guy online use clock and wait til last sec to call my shove and he had quads. Real funny

Slow Play is an art and you can only apply when you are sure to hold the Nuts.

Instead of shoving and scaring the players you Cheq or Limp to encourage the other players to Bluff. If they bite you will get a Huge win but if they know you they migth Fold as soon as you increase the bet. In this case your play is stil Slow Play, the only difference is you dont get much out of it. :ciao:

Haha, sorry your guess made me chuckle. No, to slowplay means checking or calling with a hand that's likely ahead. Say, you are holding 88, on a K87 board, you have position and your opponent checks to you. If you check back you are slowplaying your set.

Slow play with dominate full house or quads. Or Full house with draw heavy board. Anything else is not for slow playing. I also recently like fast playing.

I really hate it these days. Back when i first played (like 15 years ago) i thought it was clever to check/raise when i flopped top pair - it was free chips because i collected what he just bet... but if i lead out with a bet my opponent folds and i only win the preflop pot.

This strategy has many disadvantages though and is terrible for your table image.

I still slow play big hands to an extent - more so by betting very small my opponent has to call - i want him to improve his holdings to create a bigger pot, which i can then apply pressure to in later streets. I never like to make my slow plays too obvious though, as i mentioned it's bad for your table image if you're seen to be trapping.

In a hand i played yesterday at low stakes i entered some pots with a poor player that was playing nearly every hand, but was in profit from catching cards. I raise 9-10s on the button. As expected he calls. Flop comes K-9-7 rainbow. He checks and i fire out a c-bet with my pair. Instantly he raises around 4x. Yawn. Shitt like this pisses me off. I decided to use my entire 70 second time bank to needle his tactics before folding.

Now you know what the "slow play", but slowly play: not fast (which has nothing to do with your question) allows you to think, analyze and not to play impulsively. I play quite often slowly

In my opinion you can never slow roll when making a raise. If it is to trick someone into calling it isn't considered bad ettiquette (if it works however is an entirely different topic). Slowrolling is only if you're being put all in and take a very long time before calling and showing your cards, even though you immediately knew you were going to call since you've got a monster hand.

I agree with your explanation of slow play tho. Indeed watch out for doing it too often since you're likely to miss out on value then. But like every play there's a right time for it.

Slow play is to play a big hand like you don't have a mediocre hand, example would be limping AA.

Limping = just calling pre-flop.
