What do you do to avoid tilt?

My question is because lately I was playing more calm, since I'm trying to improve playing poker. But today without realizing it, I tilted, which led me to lose everything I had put to bet on a hand in which I had no chance to win, and knowing that my opponent had a better hand than me obviously.


So, what do you do when you realize that you are tilt?

I've been trying to think of how I might have misplayed the hand instead of how unlucky or BS it was. Maybe also listen to relaxing music while you play. If you can, maybe sit out for a few minutes and step away from the computer to clear your head.

I don't tilt because the results of any hand come down to 3 basic things:

a) I made an error that needs correcting. I can't get upset when it was my own mistake.
b) My opponents made an error and got lucky. That's fine because it's all about the long run, so short term bad luck. I want my opponents to make mistakes because I know I profit more off of it.
c) Neither of us made a mistake and it's just a cooler. Coolers aren't bad beats.

I don't tilt because non of the above upsets me.

I think one of the most important goals to achieve as a learning poker player is to recognize when you are starting to tilt. The earlier this can happen, the better for bankroll and mental health. The ability to tell when your game is changing negatively due to short term results is key. It requires a lot of self awareness. I think most players just don't have this ability.

When I realize that I am starting to tilt, I may move down to lower stakes (or freerolls) and try to re-establish normal play. If this doesn't work and I continue to get tilted then I stop playing for some time and go do something else. When I return, if I still get tilted then I try a different place to play. If that still has the same result, then I take a longer time out and read some learning material about poker.

Take a big step back. Slow everything down to a complete halt if possible. If you are playing on a cash table than leave and come back later when you have your faculties in control. It's very frustrating when you are on tilt. It's even more frustrating when you know you are on tilt and you travel down the proverbial "rabbit hole". Don't go down a "rabbit hole". If you do, tell Alice I said "hi!!" Good luck.

usually when i realize im on tilt i've have already lost but its almost like this. have a nice sum o chips and on a blink you have nothing. it happens with me most of the time that im not getting good hands. but like for an hour with horrible hands. and the good hands i get, never flop them.

I can't avoid it, but I can play through it because I can go on autopilot while I'm tilting. Not playing my A-game, not even my B-game, but often enough good enough not to play so stupid that I make a lot of mistakes.

Often it is recommended that you stop playing when you tilt. But it is also recommended that you don't play when you are depressed, hungry or in a bad mood. If I only played then I feel good I would almost never play.

Not sure what Tilt means, I will look it up in a minute, I did the exact same thing today. Only 7 players away from the money and I call an all in when I only had 30% chance of winning. Still scratching my head. I am waiting for your responses.

Whenever I’m at a table and I see a bad beat. I look at that player and offer my condolences and tell him it was just bad luck. Rest of the Table is aware of this. Then we see him play the next 3-4 hands in the row and trying to win it all back with aggressive plays on lockdown boards that are normally check and we know he’s on tilt and buying the pot. everyone else tried to get into the pot with him. I just watch in me and shake my head and mythink he should have walked away before he starts to tilt. But it’s too late and he gets felted and ultimately does have to walk away from the table
