I always thought rec/hobby players should play both cash and MTT's. And if you're starting with a small bankroll of less then $500 you should play cash only till you reach a $500. Why? In my opinion spending hours playing micro or MTT's with a buy-in less then $5.50 just isn't worth it cause even if you make the final table/win the payout is barely worth the spent especially if you're like me and play mainly only 10+ min blind level MTT's. At least when you hit a $5.00+ MTT the money is worth the time.

Play cash on work days. Play MTT's on days off(weekends). Weekends are the best time for MTT's anyways. I get up early on weekends around 6:30am-7am. Shower have a coffee/breakfast and then register for the next longer blind MTT's as they can take 6-8 hours.

There are turbo and hyper-turbo MTT's but they're more bingo and lotteries that require a lot more luck as you gotta win a lot of hands that are basically flips or very close to flips. I don't enjoy them types of MTT's as much. They're also very very high variance.

Cheers!!!

Hello, nice point of view! Which cash game would you recommend?

For newer, learning and beginner players full-ring and build up to double tabling at least. It's less variance and a bit softer player pool then 6 max. Of course the volume will suck compared to 6 max but it's really terrible once you can double table.

For vet, experienced and winning players 6 max is the obvious choice. I just switched just this year to 6 max after 20+ years of full-ring. I stayed playing full-ring that long because majority of MTT's are full-ring so it makes the switch between cash and MTT's that much easier for rec/hobby players. I don't play many MTT's this year.

Cheers!!!

I completely agree, especially when it doesn't bring profit.

Hello again! Sorry if I might seem rude, but does full-ring mean 9 players? And is it a maximum of 2 tables at a time? Which limits do you recommend playing, or does it just depend on the poker room?

I partially agree, but at the same time I think long tournaments actually benefit the better players in the long run. The longer the structure, the more skill can overcome short-term variance.

Also, for new players or those who mostly play freerolls, long tournaments can be very useful. You get to play many different hands and situations, which helps you understand the game better through experience. Even if the prizes are small, the learning process itself is often the real reward.

Rude nah you're good man. Yes 9 players is full-ring. No and even after 20+ years of playing I don't honestly know what the max tables one can sit on Pokerstars. I know all I can handle at one time is 2 tables. Use to really amaze me back in the day guys use to 15-20+ table. As for limits a few sites don't offer the lower limits of 2nl and 5nl. For new and and beginner players who mostly won't deposit much they gotta start at the lowest limits their site offers and if I was them I'd be prepared to lose the first deposit in the name of learning.

When I do full-ring challenges I use to start with $50 and play 2nl working my way up. $50 for 2nl is a bit aggressive bankroll wise but if that's all one can afford to deposit it's good to get started with I guess...gotta start somewhere. And if one isn't grinding huge volume daily starting with a $50 deposit isn't really that terrible. If I was spending 6-8 hours a day double tabling I'd start off with a bigger bankroll. But then I also hate depositing and make it my goal not too. If one has a day job and doesn't mind depositing a small amount each payday to help build their bankroll that's good.

I play mainly Pokerstars which offers both 2nl and 5nl.

Cheers!!!

It takes anywhere from 4 to 10 or more hours of nonstop play to reach the final table. This is one of the main challenges poker players face.Especially given the high level of competition and the need for deep concentration.I keep hearing that the only way to consistently make decent money is to sit at the cash tables for hours.

For those who don't have 6-8 hours to devote to a tournament, they can always play cash games or SNGs. It's a matter of taste. As stated above, "winning in MTTs is unlikely to cover the money spent"—I strongly disagree. Winning in MTTs is less common than in cash games or SNGs, but this is greatly offset by the larger prize pools. It all depends on how much time a player dedicates to leisure, if they're an amateur.

So basically: set goals, deposit a reasonable amount, manage your time, and don't play on weekends, right?

Tournaments require a lot of time, that is true. But live tournaments are even slower. :) Most of the time time passes by without me even noticing, but occasionally I just get bored and make bad decisions. Anyway, this is my hobby so I guess spending time is kind of the goal.

That's right. Small tournaments are less time-efficient

Offline tournaments take even more time, you have to travel there, etc. It can be solved so that a tournament doesn't last long, you have to get knocked out early. Hahaha. Seriously, it's really only recommended to participate in MTTs for players who have plenty of time.

Sorry for the late delay been pretty busy. Pretty much except for not playing on weekends. If I said that above it's a typo. You wanna be playing on the weekends specially if you're playing MTT's. As I play both cash and MTT's....I play mainly cash on the weekdays when I get the time. MTT's I play on the weekend because I like the longer 10+ min MTT's and they can take 6-8+ hours.

Off topic but is anyone else having issues bring the forum main page. The main page that lists all the forum sections and subsections? I haven't been able to bring it for 2 days now. Anyone wanna or have any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks in advance.

Cheers!!!

You just need to select tournaments with a duration, that fit your schedule. Most sites offer anything from Spin n Gos with an expected duration of maybe 10 minutes to large field MTTs, that might even play over multible days.

The MTT grind is basically a hostage situation sometimes. You late register, play solid for five hours, finally get into the money, and then realize you're still four hours away from the final table. If you have a job or a life the next morning, it’s brutal !!
