Governments regulate to grab their share of the market. Therefore, it's not in the government's interest to kill the source of income. What will happen is that they will apply pressure and then concede until they find a point of equilibrium where they can extract the maximum amount of our money without destroying the business! But don't be fooled. It's all for your own good. The government wants to protect you.

A practical example that could affect many of us: on another forum, a player on an international room, verified and residing in Canada, was saying that he was on vacation in Thailand but couldn't access the room because that room is not available in that country.
That player could be there for a month and not be able to play, not be able to access his money.
Does all this make sense?

I don't think poker can be banned anyway, there's potential in it that business interests won't allow it to be banned either.

I think online poker will still be around in 10 years and in 30 years. After all, poker is primarily a game of chance. Gamblers existed 10 years ago, they exist now, and they will definitely exist in 10 or 30 years. If there is demand, there will be supply.

I don’t see online poker having much of a future. My country still allows online poker without restrictions, and I don’t think they will impose restrictions anytime soon. But many countries are banning it, especially wealthy countries.

The prediction is that it will continue to exist in 10 years, but with a more regulated and technologically advanced profile, such as the use of virtual reality integration and migration to regulated markets. Yeah online poker will survive because it is one of the best card games worldwide and gaming platforms know that and will try to host it in countries which also get taxes by them. Maybe you can get a poker ID with a VPN-service included so that it is possible to play from restricted countries.
I mean there will be always be legal restrictions which make problems to play cash games in different countries around the world but nobody can promise the future.

I think online poker is something irreversible for the future, even with some restrictions on playing. For example, here in Brazil, the main problem isn't prohibiting the game itself, but the use of laws to heavily tax companies and players.

Why can't you just respect other countries laws that you're looking to be a guest in?

If you want to play on a site they don't allow in the US... don't plan on going on vacation to the US and also playing on said site.

Is it really that hard to abide by the rules of the country you're looking to go to?

Are you filing taxes on the income you earned playing poker in the US like you are legally required to or are you looking to avoid paying taxes to the IRS which is why you feel the need to use a VPN?

Honestly just obey the laws of the country you're in. If you don't like their laws relating to poker don't play there.


Also I expect an adult to be able to plan their banking needs more than a month in advance, they should know they need the money and take it off the site if they are going somewhere that doesn't have access to the site.

No, I have never written anything like that.

Regarding your opinions on respecting the laws of the country where one is located...
1) Did you know that more and more hotels and accommodation facilities are blocking gambling, poker, and even porno sites? This is happening even in countries where there are no restrictions on gambling, poker, or pornography.
You might reply that people can avoid going on vacation, and if they really want to spend a few nights away from home in an hotel, they can bring a chessboard, a deck of cards, and some porn magazines?

2) Many of these much-talked-about TV series can only be watched in their country of origin.
So, is it illegal to use a VPN to watch them if the series isn't broadcast in your country?
And is downloading movies and music, like people used to do with emule, a crime? Will half the planet end up in prison?

3) Do you know that in many countries around the world there is censorship on certain news about politics and war etc, as well as on pornography and gambling, even though there is no law regarding online gambling? If you're in those countries, wouldn't you want to know what's happening in the world, given that the news there is censored? Or do you prefer to respect the laws of that country? Do you know is some countries whatsapp call are blocked? SMS messages are monitored.

4) The situation is complex; it's easy to say "respect the laws of the country you're in" if you never leave your home,
but if you travel, and today people travel more than ever before, you realize that there's a big difference between talking about certain situations and experiencing them firsthand.

The internet was wonderful 25 years ago; you could play online poker in any country in the world, there were no restrictions, and governments didn't even know what poker was.
You could watch movies and TV series without the "this film is not available in this country" pop-up.

We were happy in a fantastic world, and we knew it.

I think that Sites like GGpoker will sign contracts with legal casinos in major countries, in order to make sure that they are able to bypass the restrictions.
I think player pools will become much bigger, and I think that regulations will make the online poker player, more "gambly", than "skillful", as safety mechanisms and "cashback" schemes will cost the players more and more. Of course if some less "gambly" and flashy sites, like WPT global, are able to remain in competition, there will always be a pool of people who play poker without all the fluff.

If I look back 10 years, it was a completely different picture regarding online poker regulations. There was much more freedom and so on. I think in 10 years it will be much worse than it is now, but hopefully I’m wrong and it will stay at least as it is now, so it won’t get worse. I suspect that hard-line left wing governments will attempt to ban most forms of 'gambling' (ie having to pay money to play something which could win you money) except, of course, government-run lotteries and football. But they will allow betting on football because they think that banning that will lose them votes. So i suspect poker willl suffer very badly in a lot of countries in the next 20 years.

I think it will survive because people need an outlet to play from home. I don't think it will ever become what it was before Black Friday. There is too much cheating and too much regulation/restrictions/red tape.

In my opinion online poker will still be around in 10 years. Addictions related with casino games and poker are to "juicy" for governments (not all of them but most of them) to just ignore them. They just want their piece of pie that comes with it.
