Well, since I am Argentinean, I was taught since I was little that the best soccer player was Diego Maradona. Ive never been in any match he played, but watched several videos of him and that got me to the conclussion that he was the best soccer player ever.

Nowadays, the player who I think is the best is Lionel Messi, because he has some skills that cant be seen in just any other soccer player-

what does cardschat think? who is the best soccer player of history and who is the best nowadays?

With me not being a follower of soccer.. I have always heard two names from soccer that have been a household name in sports past and present:

Pelé and David Beckham

Again, this is coming from someone who does not follow soccer, lol. Just two that have received a lot of press in their days.

Pele will always be one of the greats, beckham had a good press agent.

Beckham isn't one of the alltime greats, although he has been a superb player.

Messi is probably the best player around at the moment.

Maradona was brilliant for a few years but self-destructed and for that reason i go for Pele or Cruyff.

Messi by a mile today.

Over all the best player of all time is a lot more harder to say.
Pele and Maradona are two names that are always high on the best ever lists, but I would throw Cruyff,Best,Romario,Muller and my personal favorite Ronaldo(the Brazilian, not the little Portuguese ****) and a few others into the mix.

Kinda sad its only strikers/wingers/attacking midfielders that get all the credit and world class defenders/goalkeepers never get a shoot at the "best ever" title.
Some on like Maldini would probably be deserving of it...

All time there are several in range imo:

Goalies: Kahn, Buffon, Schmeichel, Zenga

Defenders: Beckenbauer, Maldini, Cannavaro, R. Carlos, Kohler, Baresi

Midfielders: Maradonna, Platini, Matthäus, Zidane, Cruyff, Charlton, Best

Strikers: Müller, Pélé, Ronaldo, Di Stefano, Eusébio, Van Basten, Puskás, Messi

A lot of hate towards CR7 ITT. Yes, he's a ****, but his ability and goal scoring record are undeniable. Someone with that power, pace, jumping and heading ability, shot power and free kick accuracy cannot be overlooked IMO (from an Arsenal fan)

Yep, me too. It was a toss-up between that one and digging up the picture of Terry Darracott from the middle pages of an old match programme which made him look like the Hulk. COYB

thought that messi was going to be the one with more votes, but what do you guys think about Diego Maradona WITHOUT considering his personal issues?
