I have seen numerous incredible athletic feats in my 72 years, but I would have to say that Eric Heiden was the greatest athlete. In the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, he won all 5 distances, from the 500 meters sprint to the 10,000 meters…that would be the equivalent in Track and Field of winning in one competition, the 100 meters, 200 meters, 800 meters, the 5000 meters and the Marathon. Many athletes dominate one or two events which are fairly similar, or dominate one sport…nobody has dominated all disciplines at one Olympic Games the way Eric Heiden did.
