The only time I was in a position to make a worthwhile deal was at a live tournament at a local casino near me where there were three of us left. First place was close to $4,000, but it was 3am and the three of us were feeling ready to pack it in. I think I barely had the chip lead, but not by enough to justify playing on. We all had very similar stacks, so the final split was an equal three ways for about $2,700 each. I usually don't cash for that much, so this was definitely a new experience chopping up the prize pool for that much money.
I would recommend, though, that if stacks aren't relatively even, that you should try to plead for an ICM chop, as whatever amount of money you essentially own in chips will be given to you. I did not want to be greedy with the chop that I made as we were all too close to make it worth it to do the math, but if there are short stacks as well as big stacks, it is best to do the ICM chop.
