Are live tournaments softer than online tournaments?

Everyone knows that rule that says nl10 online cash games are equivalent to nl200 live. Is this for tournaments too? For example: "The Big $ 44 and has the same level of difficulty as pokerstars cup $ 440 live." Is this true?

No idea how soft a cup 440 is, but id assume the big44 is tougher.

The big 44 is tougher than all $1600's in the usa.

Well not necessarily. In my hometown there is this small poker club with tournaments played three times a week, one of which has a 10$ buy-in with unlimited re-buys over first 5 lvls and with an add on that you can take at the end of the 5th lvl. There is no way to describe how reckless people are playing. It is like: betting 7BB pre-flop with 5/8 people just calling, then on the flop some ridiculous bet of just 4-5BB (into a pot of about 30-40BBs). IMO this particular tournament is worse then any micro stakes MTT I played online.And then I went to play the 100$ buy in at the same club, hoping the game would be more poker-like, only to be disappointed seeing the same players playing the same way.

LIve tourneys are tougher

Ive been to the casino and played a lot of freerolls online and I believe live tournaments to be tougher due to people being able to assess your tells and also the player having to keep up with his or hers own blinds and antes as opposed to the dealer Just my opinion tho...

I played 50-100 buy in tournaments live, and they are lots easier to play than micro or low stakes online.

Live tournaments are much easier. To compare, I think most 100$ tourneys on pokerstars are tougher than most 1k live tournaments.

People donk out a hell of a lot more online than live, that's for sure..

Also, because of the vast difference in hands per hour live takes more stamina & endurance.

I wouldn't say either is softer as it surely depends on your disposition, preferences and fundamentally, who is in the field.

I think live tourneys are softer than online ones, but it's just my opinion, and I have never ever played live tourneys, I have played online ones only.

The few times I've played live compared to what I've played online it feels like live is a lot easier. As others have said at the lower stakes in live people are lot crazier than you'd expect but at least you can see them and pick up on their tells. I just played tight and tried to see as many cheap flops as I could and I made a profit each time I played live.

I played live once and I found it difficult as online you have all the numbers, live I struggle to know how much is in pot , how much they got ect. Basically when starting off you will always find live harder

Look if there's one thing I'm sure of, it's that it's easier to play at live tables than at home. The probability of crossing recreational players is high, adding that most are bored and open more hands than usual. The big 44 I doubt that they have many recreational players since it is a tournament practiced almost every day and I am sure that they almost always play the same. So it's full of regulars and it does not have a guaranteed grand prize either.

Live or online it doesn't really matter. It all depends on the amount of the buy-in, how many starting chips you get and how fast the blinds go up. People are going to take more risks when there is less at stake. If there is not a lot of starting chips or the blinds go up quickly you are forced to gamble more often. It's just that simple.

I believe any tournaments are tougher than freerolls though. Comparing live buyins to online freerolls is like saying "Oranges are way better oranges than grapes are. I've eaten lots of grapes... and they don't even taste close to being an orange like the oranges I ate.

Live is softer imo. Most people just play for fun and want to gamble, while most online players want to make money and study a bit (not freerolls, of course, but big 44$ for example)

Live daily tournaments at a casinos are soft. They are filled with:

1) People who want to give this poker thing a shot
2) People who want to play poker but limit their losses
3) People who play bar poker or home games, play Q3s and think they're the next Phil Ivey
The beauty is that all you have to do is strike a conversation and these people will tell you everything. Plus conversation keeps them happy and happy people don't mind losing if they're happy doing it.

I'm not sure you can really compare the two. I've played in 55 $ online tourney that seemed a hell of a lot tougher than 600 $ live tourney's but have also played in 20 dollar live tourneys that were tougher than 100 $ online tourneys. It's all in the player pool and structure of the events. Also sometimes I think online seems tougher because the variance is so much more of a factor. With no physical reads your playing with blinders on and I believe players are a lot looser online as a soft rule. It's really a case of apples to oranges in my opinion.

Ryan, what online tournaments dollar amounts would you say compare to $400.00 circuit events or maybe $250.00 special tournaments that are around? I would love to play something comparable to prepare to play the circuit events when they are near by. Thank you for the advise.

love your thinking, I suppose that your right. when I saw this post title i thought about home games and small friendly live tournaments with local clubs not so much the big three day things.

In the small friendlies yes it is easier to sit there and look at your opponent and gauge a reaction on a bet. some times misleading but most of the time spot on...

with that said you can see that live games allow you to use more of your natural senses and intuition that is built on those senses.

timing helps too... when online and some one takes ages to think about it and build the courage to call or raise in your mind thats what you're thinking but I've seen so many Twitch.tv online gamer use a good long pause to give an impression of weakness as you would do in a live game but there is one thing going for you in a live game. more tells. not just time tells. you actually are in the thick of it literally breathing the smell of the players decision lol
