What's the best buy-in for tournaments?

I understand that is depending on what each person can afford, but I wonder where you guys feel like you run better and why ?

I like sticking to anything under $20 for online

$16.50, $11, $5, $3 for online tournaments usually

IRL usually $50-$500

Generally, the lower the stakes you play the worse your opponents will play, meaning you will make more money relative to the stakes you’re playing the lower the stakes are. So it really depends on how much money you are starting out with and how much money you can afford to lose. There isn’t such a thing as “running better” when playing at specific stakes. Poker is a very fair game over a distance.

I play mainly online. Over 20+ years I've played everything from $1 MTT's to the Sunday Million when it had a $215 buy-in. For me personally I've found the sweet spot at $5-$50 buy-ins. While I maybe only a rec/hobby player time matters so micro buy-ins of $1-$4 even when one final tables or wins isn't good value for time spent as I play 7-8+ hour long blind level MTT's. Micro buy-in MTT's also play a lot like freerolls where no one really cares about the stakes and will shove all and call with almost nothing(way to many callers every hand) which makes it almost impossible to get thru larger MTT fields which I also prefer.

I have played a decent number of times in live MTT's with buy-ins from $50-$1000 and done well. Being a small province of only around 1.2m population we don't get many larger buy-in MTT's then that and don't really get many $1000 buy-in MTT's.

$1 with 9 Players with a $10 Million dollar guarantee prize pool, pay out to the Top 9. That would be the best buy-in.

That depends on the site (field). There are $109 tournaments that are the same as playing a $22 tournament on another site (talking about the field, not the buy-in fee).

The best entry fee for a tournament is what you can afford; this will depend on your bankroll and your ability to beat your opponents. Your minimum bankroll to play a $5 tournament should be $500, which would be equivalent to 1% of your bankroll. This will allow you to play 100 games, and if you are a good player, you will be profitable within those 100 games.
