That's probably reverse psychology. It makes you think they want you to fold but at the same time maybe they want you to think that they want you to fold so you end up calling and then you end up losing. It's honestly just an endless chains of what-ifs so I really would try to not let that impact my decision,.

It really depends on the players. I've played with players that say this alot and when they say this. It usually means they have it.

They can mean call or fold, but would rather show you instead of you calling an taking the risk of loosing when your making them suffer by thinking and they don't want the flip anymore, sometimes they get that extra time to think about there hand. something they didn't do when going ALL IN pretty much that's it in my opinion. They can either be very strong or not as strong. So would give you respect by you folding instead of taking the chance.

When you bluff do you want to show? Probably not. Maybe. Not sure. When you are confident about your hand: will you show? If you call - good, if not - Ok, I'll show you anyway. Here is the answer. I think.
Here is a little more proof:

Love these replies! My opponent said it without me asking if he would show. I was in the tank making my decision and asked him if he had Aces and then if he had Kings trying to get some sort of read. Then he said, "if you fold I'll show". I guess the implication was that he had one of those hands. He was a bit of a dick (but I didn't realize that yet cause I just sat at the table), but still, if I had to put him in one category of either dick or nice guy I would have to go with dick, ha ha! Also, yes, absolutely, who cares about their blah, blah. But then I did start the conversation trying to get a read, so can't really blame him for that one. :) So hard to call an all in on your 3rd hand of a big tourney (it was the big 50 and I'd waited 7 hours to play!) I really wanted to play a little more, but I definitely made the wrong decision.

That is psychological manipulation. Faced with these attempts I remain indifferent.
No matter what they tell you, a cold attitude is necessary in those cases.
Greetings.

I'll show you LOL

As they say talk is cheap LOL I have found some players ego is so big they will say anything to make you think they have the nut hand when in most cases it is a 100% pure bluff.

Over the years I have learned to disregard table chatter and play MY CARDS and not some player talking.

Best of luck to ya!

Cheers ;)

I would take it to mean that if you decide not to call, they will show you anyhow. It also makes me feel to understand that the person is trying to say that I got the best hand. Although it could be a bluff, I'd probably fold my hand although it has not ever happened to me. Good luck in your games.

it doesnt mean anything really. you just need to analize his poker style ( loose or tight) and the strenght of your hand in order to make a decision on whether to call or fold the all in. live tells are almost never reliable to make a decision in most cases.

I have been guilty of this myself, I even went as far as saying I didn't want to see a flop, which was true, But I did have the best hand before the flop A/A.
I was called by a player with Q/Q and felt a lot better when one player said he folded A/Q suited "Great" I said "there is only one Queen left and one Ace, He has to hit, I don't" and to rub the salt into the would, the A/Q suited would have made a flush, had he called, but that was my reason for pushing all-in pre-flop. I didn't want players with a reasonable holding beating my Rockets! and as this was the very first hand of the tourney I took a massive pot and went onto the Final table eventually.
One thing I have learned from playing Poker is every hand can be beaten, no matter what you are holding, and in order to increase your odds of winning, you must thin the field of players, I would sooner play A/A heads up, than play it with 6 other players holding decent drawing hands. Even 7/2 off suit could have won had he hit two pair.
There is nothing guaranteed in Poker, and even the best starting hands lose quite often, some on-line players claim that the poker site is rigged and their A/A should never lose against any hand, but I am not one of them.

When the fun Stops, STOP!

Most of the times I've been in that situation I suppose it's because of a bluff, many times I think they say look at my cards, I didn't have something good and you didn't pay, you don't know how to play or something like that, but you have to be careful regardless If they show you the cards, it is best to take into account if they are playing very aggressive, if they have many chips, how often they do that and from there make the best possible decision

When someone shoves all in and that would put you all in and you are sitting there wondering if you should call for your tourney life and they say "I'll show you", does that always mean they want you to fold? If they wanted a call why would they say that? Love to hear from others experience on this one.

Wow, hard to know. It depends on the player who is doing the action, at the moment. Complicated.

Really depends on what I play, structure, phase etc. turbos, hypers, i rarely believe, depends on opponents. from low, mid deepstack and upper, I look at plenty things, still one of the main thing my opponent, but there are 4-6 other things, too.

It definitely, doesnt always mean, they want you to fold. couldnt even put a percentage for it...

I'm usually more inclined to believe they have a strong hand when they say that

It's not 100% accurate, but i definitely see them showing a strong hand more often than a bluf when they utter those words:D

I love psychology (poker or not) and this is an interesting situation which is obviously player dependent. I'd interpret it differently if online or live poker and also the specific player.

Here is the core of it:

"I'll show you" sounds like they will show you their hand if you fold and obviously you will see it if you call. Why would they want to show you their hand if they don't have to do so? Possible reasons:

a) They have the nuts/super nuts and just have to share their luck. They just hit a Royal Flush or something and it is so unlikely they just want to show off that it happened.

b) The opposite of the first one; they have completely nothing and are eager to show you a bluff they got away with. Something like Ten-high and they are just showing you they were capable of a bluff like that

c) What Phil Hellmuth calls a "pity show" which is when someone loses a hand but had a good hand themselves. Something like someone having pocket Aces and loses to someone who hit a Flush. The pocket Aces might "pity show" their Aces and convey, 'look! I had a solid hand!'

These are the most common reasons I can think of for someone to willingly want to show their hand under "legitimate" circumstances, but this is not necessarily what we have here! It is different when your opponent shows their hand after showdown versus them offering to show while it is still ongoing :D

It is generally known that talking during a hand (especially fluid conversation) is a sign a strength. It is no surprise that many pro players and regs have learned how to hold a conversation with good and bad hands alike to induce results they want. This is where this case gets interesting...

A tricky reg or pro telling you this probably knows all of what I said above and will possibly try this line if they think you know it too. Their intention is to trick you with a "reverse tell" and get you to fold under the belief that their hand was strong. Note that I say a "tricky" reg or pro because most are not too great at successfully using "reverse tells" and multi-levels of thinking what this guy is thinking to what this one thinks I'm thinking, you know what I'm thinking?

In the absence of knowing I'm up against this type of sneaky player, then I think the "answer" is much more simple. They either:

- have a really good hand and just want something (more likely if they are a fish who doesn't know talking might come across as strength)

or

- (the most likely case I think) this player holds a marginal hand and is trying to get you to fold okay-ish hands that beat them.

I predict a marginal holding for a few reasons. Let us imagine your opponent is in this exact spot and they are holding the best preflop hand possible, pocket Aces. Are most players going to engage in conversation mid-hand like this? Probably not. A tricky player might use reverse tells here, but most players are going to keep their mouth shut because they don't want to do the slightest thing to make you second guess and fold. AA usually wants a call and opening their mouth might just make you suspicious and fold.

Some players might say "I'll show you" with complete air (bluff) as I mentioned, but I think most reasonable players are more straight-forward and have at least something. The super nutty hands (ignoring tricky players capable of reverse tells) probably aren't held by them since players with them will generally stay quiet. On a board of:

Kc Js 8d 6h 2s

If someone says "I'll show you" then I'm typically expecting marginal hands based on how the action went. Maybe a pair of eights or a pair of Kings with a lousy kicker like Ks 3h.

A trickier player on this same board might have Ace-high that completely missed. It has a little showdown value, but they are worried you might call with some decent pair like a pair of Jacks, so they say this line to you out of desperation as they think you have something and might call. They probably figure you are calling regardless with Top Pair (Kings) or some Two Pair or better, but this statement is probably targeting you to fold a weaker One Pair type of hand.

Live poker gives you a slightly different insight because you can physically see them and try to determine their level of thinking (layers on layers thing) or their intentions. However, online has the absence of these physical tells and everything "said" is typed and no accident. This means it is more deliberate online and more likely to be an act, but it is up to you to still determine what kind of opponent they are and what holding they would say this line with :)

Generally I agree because the vast majority of poker players are not "tricky" enough to take this line with a bluff. If they say something like "I'll show you" during the hand, then this is typically a sign of strength and most player will indeed have the goods.

A trickier player might have a more polarized range. However, I think there is also some merit for a tricky player who isn't a top pro to have a marginal holding for the reasoning in my post. A tricky player of this caliber might be trying to induce a fold from marginal holdings when they have little themselves but something. To make someone suspicious by saying something mid-hand like "I'll show you", the vast majority of players will probably have a good hand because the vast majority are just wanting a call from a hand they are sure they will win with and are making you suspicious with this comment to get a call.

In short, it highly depends on what kind of player says this comment.

Of course, someone who is tricky now is probably going to be tricky later. It is worth noting who is capable of making such plays and who won't try it.

Whoever tells you what, you should not listen to anyone and pay attention to it, play according to your strategy, advice from the outside should not distract you from the game, the result of the game will show who is right and who is not, it happens that the opponent deliberately takes you out of the game by writing something unpleasant in the chat.

Unwise

Usually someone says that when they have a good hand, but it is unwise, both to hear it and to say it.:cool::cool:

There is no definitive answer to your question as you might have gathered from the first couple of replies. What is the angle of your opponent in saying that will depend on the style of a player he is.

I'd mostly ignore such lines and try to piece together the hand from actions taken. Because time spend thinking about what he is trying to say to you, is time spend not thinking about the hand action history.
