Looking for some feedback on this hand from a recent [$0.50/$1.00 Online Cash Game / Live Tournament].
Effective Stacks: 100 BB
Preflop: Villain (HJ) opens to 2.5 BB. Hero (Button) 3-bets to 8 BB with [As Ad]. Villain calls.
Flop (17.5 BB): [9s 8h 7s]
Villain checks. Hero bets 6 BB. Villain raises to 20 BB.
At this point, the board is incredibly wet with straight and flush draws. Hero decided to [call / shove].
How would you approach this? Is this a spot where we should be broke with pocket Aces, or do we need to proceed with extreme caution against a check-raise on this texture? Thanks in advance!

I think for me, I need to know what player type the HJ is. Is he a maniac, calling station, old man coffee, nit, whatever. How has this player played up to this point? Are they capable of bluffing here? They put in 20 big blinds into a 23 big blind pot. Can you guess what they are going to do on the Turn and River if you call? Would they do this with a JT or would they just check call here and let you keep betting on the Turn? They could easily have 2 pair or a Set and are worried about all those draws also. If you fold you are only out the 8.5 you have in the pot right now and can move on to the next hand. If you call here or jam you can be beat by a lot of combinations that they can have in their position here.

Dont cbet this board with aces! As played call and see the turn, but i wouldnt be looking to stack off on most runouts

I agree. This is a terrible board for AA, so check back and make a decision on the turn depending on the turn card and his action.

Thanks for posting this hand, this is a really tough spot!

With [As Ad] on [9s 8h 7s], this board is so wet, like you said. There are so many straights, two pairs, sets, and flush draws that can be out there, so getting check-raised to 20 BB here is really scary.

For me, I think I would lean towards just calling the flop raise and re-evaluating on the turn. If we shove here, we are only getting called by hands that are already beating us or have huge equity against us, like sets, two pair, made straights, and big combo draws. All the worse hands like overpairs or single draws will just fold.

By calling, we keep the pot a bit more controlled, we get to see a turn card, and we still have position on the button. If the turn is a safe card like a 2 or 3 off-suit and villain checks, we can think about getting value. If the turn completes the flush or straight and villain shoves, we can get away easier.

What did you end up doing in the hand, did you call or shove? And what did villain show?

Really interesting hand, thanks for sharing it for a line check!
