What is your #1 rule for table selection in cash games?

Hey guys,

We all know that table selection is one of the biggest win-rate boosters in cash games, yet many players still just sit at the first open seat they find.
What is your primary metric when looking for a profitable table? Are you looking for high VPIP stats, specific player types on your right, or just avoiding tough aggressors? Also, what’s an instant red flag that makes you leave a table right away?

I try to avoid tables with too many strong regular players. If I can find a table with players who make more mistakes, I think I have a better chance of making a profit. Good table selection is part of good poker.

Spot on. Having a maniac on your right gives you direct position to isolate them and build massive pots when you hit, while nits on your left effectively give you a free pass to open wide without getting squeezed. That seat dynamic is pure gold.

100% agree. A lot of players let their ego get in the way and waste energy battling tough regs, but win rate strictly comes from exploiting mistakes. Table selection is easily one of the highest-EV skills in modern poker

At the most basic, percentage of the table seeing the flop ; if it's very low, say 16%, it's going to be a tough table to make money at. I prefer a table with over 30% seeing the flop, increasing my ability to play s00ted connecters and small pairs.

I like to have real table selection, but as German regulation restricted player we have to take the table that the online poker room is giving us.
We can hop tables for a while and hope we can find a table that suits our needs, but all the new regulations from most pokersites make it even harder to table select (like the you have to play 6 hands(when you have posted the blinds (due to the room sits you into the BB directly, this should be forbidden)) at this table before you can leave it (only the option to look for another table may be possible at GG-Poker).
If you leave directly you get a time ban, meaning you can not open a new table for at least 5 minutes (the time period increases if you do that in a row).
It feels like you are caught in a bear trap.

Spot on regarding the flop % and VPIP metrics. When a table has 30%+ seeing the flop, your implied odds go through the roof. It completely changes the math for speculative hands like suited connectors and small pairs because you know you’ll actually get paid off when you hit your sets or disguisable draws.

Great points all around, but Goggelheimer hits on a massive issue with modern online poker. With auto-seating and anti-table-hopping penalties (like 6-hand minimums or time bans), traditional table selection is getting much harder. In those restricted environments, seat selection and quick player profiling at whatever table you get assigned become even more critical.
