Although today baccarat gambling seems fairly straightforward, its history is anything but simple. One popular theory states that baccarat has its roots in 15th-century Italy, where the game was played with Tarot cards. Via France, baccarat acquired its modern form, but until now, historians have not been able to confirm this theory beyond a shadow of a doubt.
The first reliable mentions of the game date back to the 19th century and also relate to France. In fact, it was there that Baccarat Banque was popular, a variant of the game in which the bank alternated between players. Later, in the 19th century, Chemin de Fer was developed, with the name of the game meaning “railway” and possibly referring to the fact that this version of the game was faster than the previous one.
Finally, the simplest and most popular version of baccarat, Punto Banco, was created in Havana in the 1950s and subsequently popularized in Las Vegas and around the world.
It seems a bit ironic that the simplicity of the game provokes so many questions about its history. Were you aware of baccarat’s history before? Does this topic interest you?
