In school years we often played with friends the popular card game "thousand". Of course we played it for money. In my opinion the game is very interesting and dynamic and could well find its place among other popular casino card games. Do you know this game, have you ever heard of it ?
Here is a brief description of this game from AI:

"Thousand" (1000) Card Game Rules
"Thousand" (1000)
is a popular classic trick-taking card game for 2, 3, or 4 players (most commonly played with 3). The main goal of the game is to be the first to score 1000 or more points by winning tricks and declaring card pairs (marriages).

🎴 Key Characteristics
  • The Deck: 24 cards (from Nine to Ace). Nine is the lowest card, and Ace is the highest.
  • Number of Players: Optimally 3 players. In a 2-player game, two "widows" (face-down cards on the table) are created. In a 4-player game, the dealer sits out ("rests") for the round and receives points based on the outcome.

Card Values in Points:
  • Ace (A) — 11 points
  • Ten (10) — 10 points (Important: 10 ranks higher than King, Queen, and Jack!)
  • King (K) — 4 points
  • Queen (Q) — 3 points
  • Jack (J) — 2 points
  • Nine (9) — 0 points
The total value of all cards in the deck is 120 points. Including marriages, the maximum score per round can be much higher.

Trumps and Marriages
There are no trumps at the beginning of a round. A suit becomes a trump suit only during gameplay when a player declares a marriage (holding both the King and Queen of the same suit). A player can only declare a marriage after winning a trick and leading their next turn with one of these two cards.

Marriage Values:
  • ♠️ Spades — 40 points
  • ♣️ Clubs — 60 points
  • ♦️ Diamonds — 80 points
  • ♥️ Hearts — 100 points
Note: Some variations include an "Aces Marriage" (4 Aces), which is worth 200 points (agreed upon before the game).

Gameplay and Bidding

1. The Deal
Each player is dealt 7 cards. Three cards are placed face-down on the table as the "widow" (talon/bribe).

2. Bidding (Auction)
Players compete for the right to take the widow and declare their contract.
  • Bidding starts at a fixed baseline of 100 points (the player to the dealer's left speaks first).
  • Subsequent players must either raise the bid (by a minimum of 5 points) or say "Pass".
  • The highest bidder wins the auction and commits to scoring at least that many points in the round.

3. Card Redistribution
The winner of the bidding opens the widow, shows the cards to everyone, and adds them to their hand. They must then give any one card from their hand to each opponent, so that everyone has 8 cards again.
After evaluating their final hand, the winner can increase their final bid if they believe they can score more points.

Playing the Tricks
  1. The bidding winner makes the first move by playing any card.
  2. Clockwise, the other players must follow suit by playing a card of the same suit.
  3. If a player does not have that suit, they must play a trump card (if a trump has already been declared). If they have neither the suit nor a trump, they can discard any card.
  4. The trick is won by the player who played the highest card of the led suit or the highest trump.
  5. The winner of the trick leads the next turn.

Scoring
At the end of the round, players count the total points from the cards in their tricks + any points from marriages they declared.
  • For the bidding winner: If they scored equal to or more points than their bid, they receive the points. If they fail to reach their bid, that exact amount is subtracted from their total score (going into the negative).
  • For the opponents: They receive the actual number of points they scored, usually rounded to the nearest 5 or 10.

Common House Rules (Variations)
Players usually agree on extra rules before starting:
  • 📉 Bolt (The Bolt): If a player fails to win a single trick in a round, they get a "bolt". Getting three bolts results in a penalty (e.g., -120 points).
  • 🪵 The Barrel (The Barrel at 900 points): When a player reaches 880 or 900 points, they land on the "barrel". They have 1–3 attempts to win a bid and score the remaining points to reach 1000. Failing to do so triggers a penalty, dropping them down to 500–600 points.
  • ♻️ Redeal: If a player is dealt three Nines (or a hand total below a certain point threshold), they can demand a redeal.

Never heard of this particular game tough we use to play something very similar called "Trade" or "Business" but with a Spanish deck (40 cards).

A very popular game, at least here in Ukraine. We also played it often, played for money, but even more often played just for cigarettes.

I think most players in Ukraine know this game very well. In terms of popularity, it is definitely in the top, on a par with such games as "Fool" or "Debertz".

I used to play this game. Indeed, it is quite popular in our country. The game itself is not complicated, but it has some very interesting features that make it a kind of card strategy.
