Whilst i firmly believe that at the activation of any spin - the end result is then RNG determined, the return to play (RTP) percentage is always something to consider - as much if not more than the size of the progressive pots you may see.
I enjoy slots and watching professional slot gamblers go about their work both here and in the US and you will often see such players checking these stats as they move from machine to machine.

I know in some casinos - they have floor staff that can put a machine in demo mode for you - if you are a newbie and want to find out how a slot works, also some have specifically trained slot staff to advise you as you play, you can sometimes see videos on YT where you have a customer with say only a couple hundred bucks and staff will advise on small denomination bets and walk you through the game. Playing any online slots for real money is illegal here (and in most of US), but brick and mortar casinos are legal. It is not about safety or security, it is about favors and kickbacks. The politicians don't get anything from online gambling, so they will continue to oppose them.

That is amazing Jay! Was not aware you are also a heavy casino user and wish you the best of luck in your endeavors with said games.

My preference when playing slots (rarely) is return to the player and volatility. High RTP and low volatility is preferable, though I've found it tricky to find these which is annoying. Slots is not my thing but It I did (sort of) enjoy those 'cluster' games, when you get lucky as stuff tumbles in your favour!

I guess sometimes people walk away from real opportunities when they have hit a bonus round, free spins rounds, jackpot rounds, or something similar, either by mistake, or they have to run to the toilet or a flight. That is +EV.

Although this is about live slots - it may apply to online slots also. While I think this "sniper" tactics is cute and picking slot machines that seem ready to pay a jackpot is legitimate....everybody should know that in some jurisdictions it is absolutely illegal to play (and get paid) from any slot machine that you did not actually put money in. (I am such a killjoy!)

If you think about it - the casino has all kinds of legal problems with... who they pay if the machine hits a jackpot? Who is the operator of that machine? Who pays the taxes due? etc. etc.

Example 1: I saw an old couple with white hair sitting next to each other at their slot machines. He was putting the money in her machine and she pulled the arm...and she was putting money in his machine and he pulled the arm.

Security came over and asked them what the hell they were doing? LOL

Answer: they were just having fun.

Example 2: I saw a younger couple sitting at one machine together. Man was sitting in the chair and girlfriend/wife was sitting on his lap at the same machine.

He would hand money to the woman, she would give him a kiss and she put the money in the machine and they took turns pulling the arm or pressing the button(s). So in a way they were playing the machine "together".

Security came and told them to stop doing that....lol

Again - they were just trying to have fun together.

I am warning that these weren't just house rules but one could actually get arrested for pulling an arm on a machine with unused free spins or even cashing out money left by another player.

I think the summary of what playing slots is all about would be "pay for your fun." The chances of someone winning money with this game are minimal, so set aside the money you're willing to spend and consider it as an entrance fee.

If by chance you're incredibly lucky enough to hit a jackpot, even better, much better!
