So im just curious of what everybody thinks about the difference in how you play these two. ATM i have a strategy for cash games which i generally use for both 6 max and FR and just wondered what is the main difference and how you would play them differently?

Also which would you say is better to play at low stakes, i know 6 max is pretty important at high stakes but just wondering what about low stakes.

What does everybody think is the diff in play etc.

FR=Nut peddling
6max= LAG spewing

basicly you have to play alot more loose at 6max and your faced with alot more marginal situation in 6max

Edit:pantin beat me to it,what he said..........

Depends what you call premium hands actually. You certainly don't want to restrict your opening range to pre-flop premium hands. You open premium implied odds hands.

FR you really never want to play for stack with top pair top kicker and even need to be quite careful with overpairs and such. So what you're looking for is to flop a very strong hand like a set or more, or a strong draw to a very strong hand, like combo straight and flush draw. That means playing a lot of small pairs and suited connectors kind of hands preflop.

6max it's a lot more common to stack somewhat light.

i was hoping you'd help me out belgo as i read some of your posts with zach on it a few days ago .

sorry but im not very up to scratch with poker lingo n terms what are premium implied odds hands ?

so what your saying is with 6 max you want a tighter pre flop range ? with FR you want to be playing your suited connectors and high suited gap connectors in late and pocket pairs etc.

Implied odds are basicly how likly your vilian is likly to pay you of if u hit big.
calling stations,maniacs and laggy players give the best implied odds.
For example it whouldnt serve u much good playing suited conectors HU against a rock since he whouldnt pay u off often enough to justify the prf call.
Any hand can be a premium implied odds hand if vilian is giving you implied odds(staking light,,c-bets alot and doesnt mind double barreling,cant fold a overpair).
Premium implied odd hands are conectors or one gapers(suited or not),small PP.
Basicly hands that the vilian doesnt expect you to have.

Also i know all of these types of players but struggle picking them out at a table even with poker trackers HUD i just dont know what stats im looking for.

No, you have a looser pre flop range at 6max. Let me try to explain.

Let's imagine that you choose to play strictly any pair, any suited connectors and AKo. That would give you a 10% vpip. At full ring, there is about 1-(1-0.1)^9 = 61% chance that someone has one of those very legitimate hands to open, so the majority of hands will be played with players in it who have this very high implied odds hand.

At 6max, there's only 1-(1-0.1)^6=0.47% chance of someone having a hand in this range. That means a small majority of the hands will be played with no one have a really strong implied odds hand.

Of course, since chances are higher at 6max that no one has a really legitimate opening hand, that's a reason for stealing more. And since people steal more, that's a reason to 3bet light more. And since people 3bet lighter, that's a reason to 4bet bluff more. Also, since this dynamic tends to create bigger preflop pots, it decreases the typical stack to pot ratio on the flop and that affects your optimal opening range and the strength of the postflop hands you're willing to stack with.

Finally, note that when UTG, UTG+1 and UTG+2 fold at FR, you're effectively playing 6max (although hands a statistically a tiny little bit stronger as the 3 first players had somewhat trashy hands that they chose to muck)

thanks for explaining to me belgo i appreciate your help and recognise you know what your talking about.

What are those calculations for ? So for example people may stack with 2nd pair top kicker in 6 max but wouldnt in FR?

Also what would you suggest is a good VPIP % at 6 max and FR.

When I play Online Ring Games I ussually only play 6-Max. I don't know why, but I do, and I feel like I do better at a 6-Max table.

In my experience I have much better success playing 6 max than FR. I dont know how to explain it as technically as others have done so already, but you can play a much wider variety of hands in 6 max than you can in a FR. In a FR game 6 more cards get dealt to 3 more players changing what your pockets are going to be. It also increases the number of opponents you have to beat with a given hand.

The one thing I cannot explain however is why I can play 9 person SnG very well, heads up very well, 6 max well and stink at full ring games and large size tournament fields.....

I prefer 6max anyday. The biggest difference is that because there are less opponents than if you have a good or great hand there are higher chances your opponents does not beat you preflop (the more players on the table the more there is a chance for that).
So the game is more loose and you play more hands, also, the game is so much faster which is another benefit.
I find that I get better results personally when I play 6max as I risk more and get more out of hands.
