I'm a fan of Mr. Kornheiser; however, the phrase predates him by quite a bit. For example it is listed in the Cambridge International Dictionary.

That said, it really does fit poker quite well.

Yes, I listen to Tony most days and he's very fond of his 'Old Man' schtick so I presumed it was not his originally.

The first time I heard it though. I like the quaint imagery so it will likely be a phrase I turn to those times I get it in good but still lose.

Certainly milder than some other phrases I might use. Ha ha.

being from the south ive heard same saying a little different. " even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while" i guess means the same as the sun never shines on the same dogs behind all the time lol
