Any of you move to Canada to play on ftp or ps?

I was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada so playing online isn't an issue for me. It is a great country but there are a few drawbacks. The cost of living is quite high and the weather is generally terrible everywhere. I recently chose to move to Thailand. There is a huge community of poker players here from all over the world (including many Americans). The cost of living is far cheaper, the weather is infinitely better, good beaches, great food and many other benefits. If you are serious about moving to a new country for online poker and have a sense of adventure in you I would consider some other places also.

Thailand sounds like fun.
It sounds to me as if you were living in the wrong part of Canada. Vancouver although a beautiful city (as far as cities go), crappy weather in winter months, mild summer climate & is EXPENSIVE!
I live in the Interior of B.C., (West Kootenays). Our winter months are fairly mild (as far as Canada is concerned) with temps. mostly hovering around -2 to 7C (30F to 45F) for the most part but we do get a fair bit of snow (which is great here because I am less than 10miles from one of the best ski areas in NorthAmerica). Summer months it gets very hot, with LOTS of lakes to enjoy the weather. (it is not uncommon for temps to stay at or above 100F here for two weeks straight).
Biggest difference between here & the big city though >>> it is VERY CHEAP to live here (ie. 1bdrm. apt., heat incl. $400/mth.) and everything is so centrally located, you really don't even need a vehicle. (at least a visiting poker player wouldn't find it necessary).
I'm surprised US players haven't discovered this gem. Downside for younger poker players here > nightlife SUCKS (is pretty much non-existent unless they like watching hockey games, lol). Would be a cheap place to grind though.... especially for those interested in skiing at one of the best resorts around (Red Mtn.).

Most of my friends who have re-located have gone to Mexico. It is very easy to get set up once you get down there - most are online playing in less than 2 days after arriving.

I have friends who went to Canada to play online. You have to open a bank account, establish a residency, get a utility bill with name and address on it. Submit this info to the pokersite, PS ie. and they will allow you to play. Not real sure how long the process took.

For us here in the New England area Canada is easier than Mexico. The weather is about the same as here. Minus the occasional hurricane.

All you need is a US passport. I believe you can stay for 6 months. Then you have to come back to the US for 3 days, then go back for 6 months. Grind and repeat!

I have heard that many players have moved to Costa Rica. Way mo' better weather.

Like the other poster said, I think if you play in the US the ip address would block you from the poker stars site, probably a waste of time, one option if it was not against the rules is to use a program the makes your IP address anonymous.

Im tempted to do this. I always thought if I was going to make the move to canada I should probably have 5 grand or more saved up so i dont feel like i am struggling in a new country. I live in minnesota though so im used to rain/snow. I doubt I would have the courage to do it without a friend but glad to see this post.

However, I for one like the United States and how they govern shall I say markets and the like.

The US is looking out for people not allowing PokerStars. There is a reason why PokerStars is not allowed here and I for one back the US up.

Moving to Canada to become a Citizen would take IMO at least a year just to be considered a resident but how many years to be considered a real citizen. I am sure they expect more than just one year of residency to be considered Canadian.

You may also need to learn a few things about Canada. Learn their History and show that you have a love for the Country and a genuine interest in being Canadian. Then I think you will take a step towards your goal.

To move out of the USA for a poker site, that just seems very unreal.

A note. I would not purchase for money from anyone a bank account or whatever it is they are selling. Ask PokerStars Support if that is legal for whatever Country you are trying to do this from. They may say they don't care and if so ask the Country you reside in. I am sure this is illegal activity. I would'nt put any trust, use your own name that is why you were given one.

I think Stars outclasses all other sites by a long ways.

Black Friday brought about by the good old U.S.A. has made online poker far more fractured and therefore worse. Also I got my Full Tilt money thanks to Stars. Cereus players lost all their money as far as I know. The U.S. punished online poker sites and players.

I am not so sure that it has anything to do with the US gov't wanting to look out for it's own people, notwithstanding what right they even have to tell people what they can and can't do with their own money. It has more to do with the fact that they aren't getting tax revenue from offshore online poker sites. If they had some serious moral concerns about the game then they would be consistent and ban all land based casinos as well.

Well, for many people out there online poker is their job, their career, their livelihood. And perhaps more importantly it is what they enjoy doing. If I studied law for years and loved being a lawyer and my government decided to ban lawyers I would probably look at moving somewhere else also.

As much as it sucks for U.S. players right now, I am hoping the end result will be a more regulated and transparent poker industry. It was starting to get bad around the time everything went down with many fly-by-night poker operations cropping up, cheating, and down right theft of people's bankrolls for any reason a poker site decided with no recourse.

I think it's only a matter of time before online poker becomes legal and explodes once again in the U.S. (then everyone can move back who moved away, if they want to that is).
