At what age would you start playing poker?

Of course, if you have a learning technique, you can teach people how to play well in 9 years. Just as one marvels at chess, where the 1st rank is 7 rocks, a grandmaster at 13 is no longer surprising to anyone, then the same is possible in poker, there is simply no book on poker for children and poker alphabet)

I played my first hand of poker at age 36, but I taught my kids at age 7 and 8. I think it's fun to see their strategic thinking develop, and I wish I'd found the game earlier.

If you do it right you can teach someone to play well (from scratch) in a year or less if they have the aptitude and desire.

Whilst it is my opinion one can't start learning poker early enough, there are also quite likely good reasons most parents don't start teaching their toddlers how to play...

~EDiT:- If I'm ever a parent of course that trend will be bucked...

Learn poker as early a you want but when it comes to playing with real money responsibility and maturity are needed.
Addiction is easier to impact a child life than an adults. It would be irresponsible to expose them to something that can be extremely detrimental to their life in the long term.
Definitely would not let my son play with my money, if he wants to risk his own thats up to him but thats only because his money is not subject to other commitments and priorities. He has a limited supply of it and he cant get into debt over it.
As for the game being like chess, it is nothing like chess. Chess is 100% strategy,skill and 0% luck, not a game intended for gambling. Luck can beat skill in poker as easily as water dissolves paper.
A chess player can accurately predict the next 10 moves or so. A poker player can't accurately determine next card, it is what it is. He has to cross his fingers and hope it comes his way.

I started playing when I was a pre teen maybe 9 or 10 years old with Christmas gift money, at that time $1 or $2 (I'm in my 60's now so it was awhile ago). My uncle showed no mercy and used to take our money and then my father would explain why we lost. I started playing cash games for pennies with my friends shortly after, but I had learned from my father and uncle and I took their money (pennies, nickels and maybe dimes) most of the time but sometimes I would loose a week or two allowance. Would I teach my children now in this day, probably not but it was a different time with different values. As an older man, cards and gambling are purely entertainment. We played dealers choice back then (we never played Texas Hold Em, never even heard about it). All the usual though, 5/7card stud and draw poker, blackjack, Hi Lo Chicago, In Between, and wild card (Kings and little ones, pregnant twos, and everything in between). Ah...good times.

It's a bit of a gray zone as huge parts of population take poker as a gambling game. The game itself and playing it for free, I see no problems with toddlers playing it and as you said for chess, same could be said for poker. You might get a genius or two now and then at the age of 10 who would just destroy everyone, no matter the age.
At same time poker ain't really poker if there is no real money involved. You have tons of regulation on content youngsters can approach and there would most likely be a huge taboo if parents of 10 year old would just allow them to "gamble away". I don't really see a respectable parents allowing their kids to do it.
On the side of reality however, you have thons of "kids" playing poker, same as you have a lot of them drinking alcohol, smoking ect... And a lot of them are really good at the game with less stress about it than your average adult poker player. They just won't stress that much about losing money as they are still taken care of by their families.
I myself started playing for real money at the age of 19, but known poker game for way longer. From like the age of 6 or 7..

The only way I am aware of to play online if you are under 18 is to lie about your age. Been my experience that any relationship that starts out with a lie is going to be difficult to maintain. Business relationships such as joining online poker sites by lying, even more so.

I think I was 24 or 25... it was a time when I started going to casinos for fun... then when I played my first live tournament and was able to win prizes, I loved playing and learning every chance I got.

I started playing poker when I was 15 years old in a bar in my town. From that day on I fell in love with this beautiful mental sport. Hopefully everyone at some point in their lives can practice this great sport.

What time would I start playing poker probably at a young age so that I can learn to play more and have more time to learn because the younger you are, I think your brain takes information faster and you quickly improve and learn any field, even such as poker, the younger you start, the more chance you have to get somewhere

I dont really think theres an estimate to how long you need to play to become good. I think it depends on each persons interest and talent, as well as the will to learn and get better day to day. All I know is it takes time and consistency.

I think you can learn to play poker at almost any age, just like any other card game. You don’t need experience to learn card combinations and understand the principle of the game. Experience is needed to become a good amateur or professional. I started playing when I was 20 years old, at that time I got into a poker club for the first time, and I’m glad that it happened at that age, when I already had an idea of how life works. In general, the first time I played poker on the street with friends, when I was about 12 years old. We played draw poker, and instead of chips we had regular matches in a box.

I started playing after 40 years, or rather I started when I turned 41. Why did I wait so long? ...... the answer is very simple, I did not know that poker is such an interesting and wonderful game. If I knew how cool poker is, I would have started much earlier, I would have started right when I turned 18 and maybe now I would be a professional player
