What is the best seat to have at a table?

When playing a live cash game, I like seat 10. You can sometimes pick up extra info from seats 1-3 since they will often start to act before you do since it is tougher for them to see you.

In live tournaments, seats 4-6 are the best for me as I can watch all the players the easiest from here.

Online, seat selection only matters if you get to choose it.

Now if you are just talking relative positioning, you want tight players on your left and loose players on your right.

I agree with the tight loose position. Other than that it is strictly player preference with little difference as far as i can see.

I always like to play on the seat button. This is always the best seat for me. I usually win a bluff here.

I like to sit on the left of the second best player with the deepest stack. I hate the seats directly next to the dealer.

Why not sit on the seat directly to the left of the best player, you ask?

Well, I cannot occupy two seats at once, is why.

I prefer loose on my right also but I've been able to take advantage of having loose players on my left online. There are a few players I see regularly that frequently come over the top with near anything so if I have rockets or kings in early position then I can just limp and wait for them to make their standard raises. It really increases the action as no one at the table takes their raise seriously.

This is not common though so unknown loose to my right is ideal. I generally prefer any aggressives to my right also wether they are tight or loose. Once you get them on a range of hands it's easy(ish) to use their aggressiveness against them.

Thats a very interesting point of view. Im going to have to test that out next time I play live. One would figure that any seat is just as good as the other though.

Sit in seat 1 sometime and see how easy it is to keep track of what seat 10 is doing.

My first and only live tourney had me in seat 1. I did not like it. I couldn't tell you what sex seat 10 was, and seats 8 and 9 were pretty much obstructed by the dealer. But she was a lazy bitch who blew the very first hand and had to be corrected by the players.

Since I was in seat 1, I got to see that any seat between 4-7 (10 seat table) should give a good view of all the players.

Online the only thing that matters (since every site I know of allows you to be bottom center (if you want) is the style of players on your left and right.

Loose to my right I find puts me in a protected situation. Him being loose (and me recognizing it) puts me in defensive mode and I am playing fewer hands. This protects me from chip spew.

At any table you want the loose people on you're right. Then they do the betting for you, and you have position on people who like to put money into the pot with not-so-good hands. That's a big money maker. Plus you can three-bet them light on occasion.

You want the tight-wads on your left, as they won't defend their blinds and if they do fight back you know to give up.

If you don't know who is loose or tight, sit with the big stacks on your right, because then you have position on the money.
I'll also avoid sitting in a seat if there's some short stacker on my left, as I hate making implied odds calls only to have them shove on me and ruin my odds.

Now, exclusively at a live table, you may want to sit in a different spot according to what you can see. With oval tables some seats offer better views of the other players.
At some family games they used long rectangular tables (Hershey Bar shaped) so sitting on an end was a big advantage.

Where I play live they'll play the ball game on a projector, which is a distraction I don't need, so I prefer to sit with my back to it.

I prefer the button and also agree with Jilly on having the tight player on your left and your loose players on your right.

This^^^^^ except I dont like seat 1 or 10 hard to see around dealer and see reactions when board cards come out.

Hmmm, for b&m cash games, I prefer seats 1 or 9/10...next to the dealer >>> I tend to look @ peeps' hand placement/movement for tells (rather than faces). Seats 2 & 8/9 are too far away from the board for me to see the cards clearly so I end up having to lean up & in to read the board. Seats 3-7/8 kinda makes me feel claustrophic. So for me it's more of a comfort thing; if next to the dealer is unavailable then I'll opt for either 3 or 7/8 & request a seat change when available.

I prefer 5 and 6 best to watch the whole table. You play you're position accordingly same as loose and tight players regardless live. Online you make notes and play the players and position accordingly as well. Since they always sit you in the middle.

seats 5 and 6 are the best for me. not just so i can see everyone, but i can see the cards much better. i agree seats 1 and 10 are awful, but most other seats are not quite so bad.
