Bluffing NEVER ??

The most basic, and most recognized, term in POKER is the Bluff. Bluffing describes the act of making a bet or a raise when you do not have a good enough hand to win a pot. The object of this bet is to force the other players out of the hand, thus winning the pot, by pretending you have a superior hand. Without the ability to make a bluff you will never be able to win at poker. There goes that big "NEVER" statement....well, let's say that one should mix in a calculated bluff occassionally. I play poker because I still find it fun...But you bring it to a new level..That's a good thing ...the way you disect every hand ...every position ...every card... I just see three Aces and bet! You have broken it down to a science...WTG...very informational!

your blogs have helped me to understand the nuances of limit so much so I play that version more often now.

River strategy

If an opponent has bet and you are the last player sttanding between him and the pot how do you determine the likelihood that you hold the best hand. You have to consider your hand, the way the hand played out. when considering whether your opponent has drawn out on you and has the best hand, I put my hand's chances into four basic categories.

1) best hand-you're 85% certain you have the best hand

2)toss-up hand-you have a 50-50 chance of winning.

3)longshot hand-you have less than a 50% chance of winning the hand.

4)busted draw-you have virtually no chance of holding the winner.

These catagories seem almost an obviouse series of choices, but it sometimes helps to get back to the basics to improve your game.

Flush draw

If you are cetain that someone is on a flush or straight draw then you can either jam the pot and put your opponent in the position of having to catch cards or play it out. If they jam the pot on the flop then I am calling because I am ahead. If you both simply bet the hand normally and a third suit or connector does not hit the board on 4th street or the river, the hand is likely yours. If on 4th street your opponent still does not draw then you have the option of jamming the pot (if you have not already done so) because the chance of the draw is cut in half on the river. I would not lay down the best hand on the flop until I was sure my opponent hit their draw because you can always fold. If you are sure of what your opponent is holding then it is an easy hand to play because they will hit their draw or they wont. The percentages do not matter as much as placing them on certain hands and playing the board accordingly. Outside of that, we have to take our lumps against people who hang in there till the bitter end to catch cards. Also remember that statistically you will win in the long run so try to think long term while playing this type of hand.

In tournament play when you fop a strong hand such as 2 pair or you hold AK and an ace hits the flop...say you bet big and are re-raised all in with two two a suite on the board...typically, I am up against a guy drawing to a flush and literally, 13 of the last 14 times he has hit his flush. Do I fold 2 pair when reraised there...especially if the person is on a flush draw? it's very discouraging to see so many players put their tournament life on the line wit a flush draw??
