Is calling four of a kind as "two pair", acceptable?

No, because four of a kind is four of a kind, and two pair, is two pair. If you ever tell someone you have two pair before showing them the winning hand with four of a kind expect to be assaulted.

The reason I asked the original question, is because we have one player who thinks he is so cool to announce his winning hand of 4 of a kind as 2 pairs.

I told him if he elected to call it as 2 pairs, then my 3 of a kind beat him.

Needless to say, I was derided.

Four of a kind is called four of a kind and two pairs are two pairs. Your friend needs educating, although in a Heath Robinson way he is technically correct in English, but not in poker

If they want to be cute and call quads '2 pairs', they can.

However, if you have a showdown hand, make sure they show their hand instead of you just taking their word for it.

If you believe and fold without seeing a hand (when they need to show), then that's on you.
