Computer memory & poker

I just added 2GB's of memory to my computer (only had 1/2 GB before) and my computer runs soooooo much better. Makes multi tabling and running Pokertracker so much more efficient. Before, my computer would lock up often and I couldn't open more than 2 tables without risking my computer to freeze up. Last night, I opened up 19 tables and my computer didn't go haywire. Sweet! (no I wasn't playing all 19 tables.. ) I highly recommend anyone having computer issues when multi tabling or running multiple software to add some memory. Definitely worth it. I should have done this a long time ago.

didn't think it would make sense economic-wise to add rams instead of buying a new one...isn't an old pc when it only has 1/2 ram installed?

Just as a rule of thumb you should always max out your RAM capabilities, especially since RAM is so cheap. I think the max is 3GB for Windows XP, 6GB for Vista ... and it's recommended with Windows 7 that you have at least 3GB ... so upgrade!

RAM is very cheap, so I wouldn't say it's cheaper to buy a new PC than to buy RAM. And I consider 2GB to be a bare minimum for any PC these days running WinXP or higher.

Technically, the Windows version isn't the limiting factor. 32-bit versions of any OS, including XP, Vista, Linux, OSX, etc. can address a maximum of 4GB of RAM. 64-bit versions can address a whole lot more. In reality, 32-bit operating systems cannot utilize all 4GB of its addressable range, due to upper memory reservations for things like video cards and other peripherals. Typically either XP or Vista in their 32-bit versions will only "see" around 3.2GB - 3.5GB max.

I spent $63 for the 2GB (plus I received a $20 rebate, so really $43). I'm hoping it gives my computer at least another couple years of use. If it does, then I think it makes sense. I'm also glad I don't have to reinstall all my applications on a new computer, at least for now.

I've got 4G on XP Pro, the Wife's quad-core has 8G.
Both systems scream.

BTW - I bought 8GB of PC6400 for what I could by 1GB of PC133... what a crock.

my POS craptop only has a gig. in fact, out of my other computers, which are all freebsd i don't think i have anything more than a gig..but they're all dinosaurs. my oldest computer just turned 10
CPU: Pentium III/Pentium III Xeon/Celeron (448.97-MHz 686-class CPU)
real memory = 167772160 (160 MB)
avail memory = 154361856 (147 MB)
...needless to say, i don't play poker on that one, haha...its basically retired aside from the computer that i "chat" from, haha....but still runs bsd like a champion so whatever.

whenever i have 2+ poker sites running on this laptop it can be a drag, especially when bodog is involved. its fine though, dog the damned thing out
