Declaring the wrong Hand

Is there a rule that say's that if you declare the wrong hand at showdown you lose the hand...

It came up recenlty in a live local tournament (not a casino) when a player declared his hand as a low straight which was beaten by a higher straight, he then showed his cards which turned out to be a flush. The dealer declared his hand was void because he declared the wrong hand.

As far as i was aware the hand should have stood as a flush even though he miss read his hand...

Any thoughts ?

As far as I knew, CARDS speak. AKA his hand is a flush and should have won.

Deliberately lying about your hand would result in a penalty and perhaps a ban in a cash game.

Cards speak (cards read for themselves). The dealer assists in reading hands, but players are responsible for holding onto their cards until the winner is declared. Although verbal declarations as to the contents of a hand are not binding, deliberately miscalling a hand with the intent of causing another player to discard a winning hand is unethical and may result in forfeiture of the pot. (For more information on miscalling a hand see “Section 11 - Lowball,” Rule 15 and Rule 16.)

As above, cards speak and his flush should have won.

You can and should be penalised if you're deliberately miscalling your hand, trying to force an opponent to fold their better hand for example (which is one of the reasons why you MUST show your cards to win any part of the pot at showdown). But this sounds like a genuine mistake and the player should be awarded the pot.

That's completely ridiculous if he lost the hand because of that lol. What the player declares means absolutely nothing. The cards read. That dealer was obviously an idiot lol

Only verbal ACTIONS are declarations! So saying fold, call, raise etc stand but when it comes to the content of the hand the cards are the only thing that matter

It is the dealers job to read the cards and determine the winner. The cards speak for themselves. That why you should turn your card up, for everyone to see , unless you know you lost when seeing the other cards.

The cards are the proof. It is the dealers job to read and declare the best hand. A couple of years ago in a huge pot I turned the nut flush in a PLO8 game. I was so happy the river didn't pair the board I didn't realize that the river also gave me the nut low. We all (4 players) exposed our cards on the felt and the dealer declaring the scoop for me was a pleasant ~$400 extra in winnings. She got tipped

At showdown, its the dealers job/work to read all hands and determine whos the winner no matter what verbal things come out among players either true or false.

Except if its a house rule, that dealer above should be discharged for good.

Yes, but he says this was not at a casino. It could well have been at a local bar in a pub league where the players take turns dealing the cards. That league may have their own rules. And what if the other player in the hand was actually the dealer? Do you think he/she is going to point out your error? The bottom line is: PAY ATTENTION!

i think that if he just made an honest mistake then by showing his cards he has to win the hand, i mean he has the flush who beats the other player straight so why dont give him the pot? the cards should speak in this situation however if he continue doing that then his hand have to be void to penalize this player.

As far as I know the cards speak for themselves. One time this old man announced on the river he had a straight. I had pocket KK and mucked my hand. Then he shows down and he actually didn't have a straight. But I already mucked so he won the hand anyways. Moral of the story is don't muck your hand after another player announced his hand!
