Difficulties of moving up in stakes

Do the players get significantly stronger as you move up stakes or is it not that much of a difference? And do you think that the differences are bigger between certain stakes? (for example: maybe its easy to progress from mikro to low stakes but very hard to get from low to medium stakes)
