Poker is a sport because it is played for entertainment, is competitive, and almost always requires both physical and mental prowess in order to consistently play and win at the highest levels. Online multi-tabling players are required to have acute hand-eye coordination and both live and online players need physical endurance to play long sessions.
If consider chess as a sport then poker as well is sport!

Do me a favour, it's never in any way a sport, possibly mentally challenging, but never physically.

It is a game kind of like a coach and the cards are the players. Same as football right.

No, poker is not a sport! and never will be! since in the game, in addition to skill , a lot of luck decides !!! And she is a very obstinate young lady and you can't train her in any way:ciao:

Poker is not a sport. Playing drums is closer to be a sport and I think it will never be in the olimpic games.

I don't think being in the Olympics is where you draw the line on whether something is a sport or not.
MMA is a sport but will never be in the Olympics.

I take your point however Poker is no where near a sport.

Poker IS skill game in long term. It is gambling if you play a hundred or thousand hands. There are large luck factor there. Still if it goes further, over 10k hands and more - skill takes control. Every misplay or fault of yours are counting, or every skill in PREflop, Postflop, bluffing or semibluffing - counts. No fortune anymore

If it does get to the Olympics, it will be quickly followed by Super Mario Bros., then Fortnight then Playstations Formula 1 series games.

Which all are as much of a sport as Poker.

Hello, cwdignus! I think, first of all, the Poker is Game, of course! In the same time, by my opinion, for the successful play
in the Poker necessary many qualities from different kinds of sport, as physical endurance, patience, psychological stability,
quick reaction, that is ability to make the optimal decisions by possibility in short time, and etc... Although of course to permit
Poker in Olympics this is controversy decision... But I'm personally not against.

it’s interesting if a player pays a win tax, then this is a sport, but since poker players are players, not athletes, this is a game

People want to categorize everything and even chess is included as sport (as far as i know), so why there isn't like category for brainsport (at least when it's on competitive level) :D. E-sports require much more fast reaction time and motor functions so that could be sort of lonely hybridwolf. Multitable poker is where this thing starts to get tricky for me to do some categorizing :D Point is, why people always want some one correct answer for everything :)

poker is always a test of your strength
therefore, everything that contains the concept of the spirit of the contest of skill and experience can always be compared to it

It is a sport, but mind sports are differents from physical sports. I apreciate a lot of mind sports and I wish to see a great event aproaching main mindsports like chess, memorization, mental math, go, bridge... Beyond poker. It is almost impossible because the most visible and profitable of these sports is the poker and I see that we are a little niche yet. We need too take off the nerd aspect about mind sports that in my opinion is a negative image about it. Poker could to do it very well but other mindsports need to turn their image more friendly and more popular.
