Do you consider yourself an athlete?

I wanted to know your opinion. With the increasing popularity of this discipline. I pretty funny to see people's posts on various sites, foaming at the company prove that poker is a sport ofigensky, on par with football, chess and other (although it is clearly closer to chess). For me, sport - it's more physical. As a fact against "poker sports" I see the influence of luck. And though over time it has only 10 \ 20 \ 30% of success, I see only one objective reason to recognize the sport of poker - so as not to expose him to persecution, and displacement at the same time with the casinos and slot machines

Nice topic

like nice hand. Poker is not so much sport like some kind of competition. competition betwen players who want to know who is more skillful, more aggressive and more lucky! closer to chess is a mistake! chess players calculate many moves ahead, poker is changing every hand. So my opinion is that poker is a non sport (active sport) competition!

As far as a sport is concerned poker is in the same category as doing arm curls in a bar. It is all about the mental concentration as to when to cash in and get up and leave before things go wrong.

Yes I was an athlete in my day playing multiple sports. The feeling I get mentally is the same for poker as for any other sport. I want to strive to be the best in whatever competition is set before me. The dream of holding up the trophy at the end is what drives me!

I am not sure even Poker is a sport or not! But as a chess player I could definitely say that if your body is in good conditions, then your mind will be fresher and you will be able to think clearly and therefore play better and this apply for poker as well!

So, if you decide to become fisically better to improve your capacity to play and resist especially at tournaments, then you can consider your self and athlete!

People named poker sport course there are competitive process in it. You can win and you can lose. Sport is not only physical moves. Sport is move of brain also ))))

Poker is definitely a game, it's definitely a competition, it's definitely in the same category as chess and Scrabble and World of Warcraft, and it's definitely not a sport.

The main issue here is people differ in their personal definition and understanding of sport.

Note that saying that something is not a sport is not an insult to that something. Rather, it's just using semantics to define something. Just as calling something a sport doesn't automatically validate it as anything. Again, it's just definitions.

The International Olympic Committee actually recognizes 'bridge' as a sport. What about gin rummy?

idk... lookin' around any poker table I've been at, I certainly don't consider it to be a sport (not by my own definition anyways).
OP, I might consider online poker to be a bit of a sport some of the times I've ended up in hands with you in the CC games... thinking "WTF?" & then wishing it were some kind of combat sport or 'virtual MMA' (same goes for BogdanStark)

I don't think poker is a sport. I would rate as a mind modality.
Sports for me depend so mush less of luck than poker, it's more relationated to your physical and training, and luck doesn't count so much. In poker, even with much studying and dedication, luck has a strong influence, I think.

Poker is a mind sport.

If you consider sports just to be those sort of games that include moving and sweating you would also remove lots of other games that mainly are considered as sports (like darts) away. Also being a game and sport are also not mutually exclusive. I guess this discussion has happened with about every time a new sport type in introduced if they are "real sport" by the old school people.

Lots of "real sports" also have luck as a major effect. Though not so easy to calculate mathematically.

Not a big matter though. But I'd rather see poker news listed under "sports" than "entertaiment".

Poker is not a sport and poker players are not athletes. It does share some aspects mental competitiveness and you might preform better by taking care of your body, but the same holds true for a sales presentation, a legal debate or a number of other professional activities. None of which a person would consider a sport performed by athletes. I'd place bowlers closer to athletes than poker players.

On a personal opinion poker is a sport, it is not the same as soccer but is a mental sport, and while luck has to do at the end need more than luck to win

It is compared to sports because it is competitive and the better you are the more money you can make like ball players. It is compared to chess too , because it is a mid game and requires mental skills among others. The influence of luck should not matter because luck is involved in almost anything. In football ( or soccer whatever) for example when the pro player misses a penalty which is an easy shot he is just unlucky he doesnt luck skill. And if the goalkeeper chooses the right side and blocks it he is also lucky. But I don't see anyone calling the goalkeeper a gambler...
