We all have those sessions where nothing goes right.
You get good hands… you lose.
You bluff… they call.
You fold… and realize you had the best hand.
At some point, it really feels like bad luck is following you around the table.
But is it actually bad luck?
Sometimes, it’s just our mind playing tricks on us. What’s known as negative bias makes us focus more on bad beats and losses, while we forget the hands where things went our way.
And then there’s confirmation bias — once you feel unlucky, every lost hand becomes “proof” that luck is against you.
But if we’re being honest, it’s not always about luck.
Tilt, frustration, and small mistakes can quickly turn a normal session into a bad one. One wrong decision leads to another, and suddenly it feels like everything is collapsing.
For me, I’ve learned that the best thing to do in those moments is to slow down… or even take a short break before things get worse.
What about you guys?
When you feel like luck is against you, do you keep playing or step away?

Its frustrating sometimes, but I try to view it as transitory and move onto the next game.

If it seems to happen for a longer period I review my play, study more, and play less.

I never feel like bad luck is following me but I do experience some stretches of running poorly. The main thing for me is how I react and the work is keeping my emotions in check. Stay analytically focused, remove emotion, keep making the best decisions possible.
If I'm playing MTT's I might stop registering into more games. If I'm playing cash I will typically push through and keep playing... and keep 'doing the work'

I usually try to take a short break, because when I keep playing frustrated, I start making bad decisions without even noticing it. Sometimes what feels like "bad luck" is really just tilt slowly taking over 😄

Everyone goes through this phase at regular intervals of their playing cycle!
It’s actually at that particular point itself when strong minded players standout from the mediocre ones by showing grit, determination, patience and perseverance!

Sometimes when I start playing, I let my emotions take over and play on instinct.

I've actually done an analysis of the times of year, and although I haven't reached a definitive conclusion yet, these periods of bad luck seem cyclical and occur during the same times of the year.

Yeah, everyone feels that sometimes. But honestly, most of the time it’s not “bad luck chasing you” it’s just variance plus a few unnoticed mistakes.

The real danger is how you react. When you feel unlucky, you start playing differently looser calls, forced bluffs, trying to win it back too fast. That’s when it stops being just bad run and turns into bad decisions.

For me, that feeling is a signal. If I notice it, I’d rather stop. One bad session is fine, but a bad mindset costs way more.

I think it’s psychological — we tend to look for some kind of conspiracy or feel like we’re the only ones getting unlucky. But first, it happens to everyone, and second, it’s just part of poker — you can’t avoid it. It will keep happening the whole time you play. The main thing is not to dwell on it.
I sometimes have stretches of 3–4 days where no matter what I play, I still get sucked out on by complete garbage.
