I think it took me about 8 months (5 times, lol) to start amassing a bankroll and keeping it. It starts w/the old saying, "don't bite off more than you can chew,". I think that's self-explanatory. 
Play at a limit you're comfortable losing in. I know, that doesn't sound right but trust me, it's key. 
If your bankroll is under $100 then I'd concentrate on freerolls and trny's $1.50 or less; sng's too. Triple that into $300 and move up ever-so-slightly to no more than $3 buy-ins.
If you're a "shot-taker" and can afford a decent trny, something like an $11 buy-in, for example the Boski which runs every day, if I'm not mistaken, and has a $10K GTD payout. Win it twice the 1st place gets doubled, I think? Something like that. Anyway, playing in one of these once a week or month isn't frowned upon.
