I wouldn't say ruined, but I do regret the days back in college when I would drop 5 figures on soccer bets in a night.

Other than the time lost, my poker has fixed one cataract, and will soon probably fix the other. It has given this old man a sense of purpose for my remaining days.

Poker has kept me clean after years and years of drug abuse.

So, it can be said that poker ruined my life, by vastly improving it. But then we have to discuss what a 'life' is and how anything that changes that 'life' can be considered ruination.

A good school friend of mine was the same but his slot addiction ended with him going to prison, he got caught burgling a shop. when we were 18 he used to give me his money to keep for him when we were on nights out just so he wouldn't put the lot in the machine. I myself ended up going home early a couple of times due to putting my money into a slot machine, but I saw the error of my ways pretty quickly.

I'm sure he's got himself sorted out now though, haven't seen him for a while but have heard he's doing ok now.

That's an interesting point dj. When I watch the UFC, all the time there are guys on there that say things like "if I wasn't fighting I'd be robbing banks" or something to that nature. And there's the story of Mike Tyson, a guy that'd probably be dead in the streets at an early age if it weren't for boxing. So I wonder how many people out there where gambling has been a positive influence in their life instead of a negative one.

I sometimes look at the high stakes rollers who have made millions.ivey,dwan,esfandiari blablablabla..... And i think to myself. If i had made 2 million dollars from playing poker,then that would be enough money for me to retire and live off of interests .travel the world. go to tropical places. eat crabs and all that stuff. The money is more than enough to do something like that. But instead you see them wasting their lives inside a casino or a desk with a laptop trying to make more and more, which in many cases leads to losing more and more.

what im saying is that if you succeed and then u dont stop,then thats when u r at the bottom of the barrel. cause there is nothing worse than winning amillion from scratch and suddenly being back to scratch. it must feel totally depressing.

not that ive ever done it but thats what i imagine it being like.

And one more thing. I said once in a thread that i play poker to make money and everyone jumped on me saying things like : you should be playing for the love of the game etc etc. WEL of course i love the game,its amazingly entertaining ,but i assure you that if i ever made big money,i would not be spending the same amount of time grinding but id be enjoying my life.
I find it to be dangerous to fall in love with the game as a game and to forget that the reason you are even playing it in the first place is to win some money.

and one more thing;

I think there is a HUGE difference between grinding it out and making two million from scratch and a difference between being a semi pro and suddenly winning the sunday million. I believe the second category can quite easier than the first and probably should quite cause they are probably not as good as the first and are more likely to lose it all.

This thinking makes zero sense to me

Why would it be likely for a semi-pro who`s won the Sun.Mill be likely to lose it all

Are they all of a sudden going to throw bankroll management out the window & gambool it all up on highstakes

I`ve seen guys playing in $10 mtt`s on Stars who have previously taken down large scores (ie. chopping the Sun Mill 10A) & many others also.

Not everyone who makes a nice score becomes a degen.

Well, let me explain why i said that. the people who turned 100 dollars into 2 million know how hard it was to follow strict BRM and slowly and gradually move up the limits ,step by step and hand by hand,day after day and night after night. Meaning they earned the 2 million with their effort and they know how easy one mistake can shove it all down the toilet (not following brm, playing drunk,playing on tilt or whatever).

The second category who just suddenly got there in the blink of an eye(winning big tourney,etc) might suddenly think they are gods gift to poker and might go play in outrageously high limits where the ones who grinded it from scratch know that mistakes like that are costly and could cost you everything.

I think this makes some sense. dont you?:hmmmm:

EDIT: when i said semi pro,i wanted to say someone who thinks hes a pro but is actually not as good as they might think they are.

No, it's that if you're the type of person who is attracted to gambling in the first place, and are the risk seeking type, you will not change overnight just b/c of a few zeros in your bank account. Sitting on the beach will sound boring. They WANT the action. That's WHY they have $2m winnings. People do not change.

i am wondering if you are a poker player or a gambler or someone trying to get people to stop playing because of an anti gambling agenda. the reason i ask is because i cant imagine anyone connected with gambling or poker who has not seen people who have gone over the deep end chasing good money with bad and got into awful situations.

I am neither a poker player or a gambler. I don't care what people do, but I like hearing stories of human behavior. I just play poker on my phone for fun. I posted b/c of exactly what you said. People here have to know some crazy gambling disasters of people they've known at one point.
