I'd say both - the fun keeps me playing, and the money keeps me sharp. What's your main motivation?
That's a really good question. At first, I thought I played for the money, but there was no fun in it—I was just thinking about theory and how to make the optimal play all the time.
These days, I pretty much just play for fun. I don't really have the time to dedicate to poker anymore, but weirdly enough, the stuff I learned back then is still useful. And without the pressure to have to be a better, profitable player, I kinda ended up playing better anyway, go figure.
In the end, I think I got to a point where I realized I was a bit addicted and just didn't have the right mindset to actually go pro and make
real money. So I basically just stepped away from it. Now I'm strictly a rec player, eh? I spend most of my free time on chess, my uni research, playing guitar, video games... that sort of thing.
