I’ve done it a few times, and it almost always ends badly.
When I'm not in the right mindset, I tend to make lazy folds or bad bluffs — both are costly.
Now I try to only play when I’m focused, even if it's just 30 minutes a day.
I’d love to hear from others: do you have tricks or rituals to “get in the zone” quickly before a session?

Sometimes, but I try to avoid it. Playing when I’m not focused or tilted usually leads to bad decisions and losses. It’s better to take a break and come back fresh.

When I played to earn money, I had to.

You can't just work when you feel like it.

Now, when I play only for fun - of course not.

There were times when I played just because I had nothing else to do.
I couldn’t really focus and I usually ended up losing.
I even wondered if I was playing because I enjoyed it or if I was just addicted.

Now I set specific times for when I play.
I actually look forward to the time when I’m allowed to play poker.

Certainly there are times when one is too lazy to do anything & there seems nothing interesting to watch. Can't sleep, staring at the laptop & then buy-in on a couple of SNG poker games just watching cards flip around until eyes get tired then fall asleep. zzzzzzzzz

Honestly, playing poker when you’re not in the mood is the fastest way to set your bankroll on fire. I’ve learned the hard way that if my head isn't in the game, I’m not playing poker,I’m just donating. Poker requires 100% of your mental bandwidth to catch timing tells, track board textures, and stay disciplined. If I'm bored, annoyed, or just tired, I start making 'lazy' decisions, like calling a 3-bet just to 'see a flop' instead of folding like I know I should

First — what you’re describing is actually one of the biggest separators between long-term winners and break-even grinders:

Session selection > table selection.

If your mental state is off, your edge shrinks instantly.

As for me, I'd say I used to play alot of poker in the past, is play every MTT available which would usually drain me dry, but now I've learned to pick the best games, meaning I have more time to really concentrate because I'm not exhausted or drained

Not an ideal situation as a few beats will likely put you in tilt mode making g even more bad plays

If I play when I'm tired or just not in the mood I end up loosing money. It gets very costly, so I try to avoid it. I find I play much better when I'm rested, I've eaten healthy and feel ready to play a session of a few hours of poker. Pushing myself to play poker when I'm tired is like pushing myself to eat chocolate when I don't feel like it- not a pleasant experience. As to tricks to get in the zone- just get noise canceling headphones, listen to music, don't let the table conversations drain your energy.

The thing is, I'm almost always in a bad mood. :ROFLMAO: Every day feels like I'm living in the movie Groundhog Day. But online poker helps me forget about all my problems for a bit and somehow find myself at the table.

don't do this. don't play when you don't feel like it, you will NOT win anything when you are down.

Take a break !

I’ve done that too, and it usually doesn’t end well. Now I only play if I’m at least somewhat focused. Before starting, I do a quick check: if I’m tired or irritated, I just don’t open the tables.

I play because it's something I enjoy, so if it isn't bringing me joy I go do something else.

I can't play without the mood, I've tried it many times, it's just a loss of money.

Many people turn to the game as a cure. They hope that poker will save them from loneliness, financial problems, or emotional distress. This approach does not bode well. While poker doesn't alleviate emotional distress, it can also become a source of new problems. When playing in a bad mood, people are more likely to make mistakes and consequently lose, which, as you can imagine, only makes the situation worse.

Lack of mood is lack of motivation... I noticed that when you're most calm and cynical, you act like a tank! And you're doing it! )

Multi table, you fall or take a bad turn and there's already action at another table.

Personally, I wouldn’t.
Playing when you’re not in the mood usually means lower focus and higher chance of mistakes or tilt. Poker punishes small errors over time.

If I’m tired, stressed, or distracted, I’d rather skip the session.

Better to play fewer sessions at your A-game than grind in C-game mode and lose EV.

NO!!! When you're in a bad mood, the irritability threshold is lowered.
