Family prejudice

Wazzup poker gang.

So, I've been having some trouble with family prejudice towards poker. Okay, I'm not a kid anymore and I pay my own bills but I'm not happy with the fact that my parents think that what I'm doing will make me loose all my money and I'll be addicted to it and most of all, to have them thinking that poker is a luck game. I'm managing to show moms some evidences that poker is a sport. A mental sport and beyond. But dad is another suit. Anyways, do you guys go through the same? Have y'all managed to overcome such situation?

Yes. People who are not familiar with poker think that this is a gamble and you can lose all your money, home, your wife

, etc.
But this is always the case, you either know something superficially, or deeply, as a rule.
You just need to explain to your parents in simple language so that they understand everything and calm down.
For example, a $1 buy-in tournament. You can only lose this dollar.
I watched a documentary, there was one guy in a similar situation and he explained everything to his parents and showed his financial records so that they would not worry about him ( Bluffer sa vie: la réalité du poker québecois)

I wouldn't say my mother had a prejudice to it but they were definitely ignorant to the dimensional areas of where you can be successful at it though. And yes you can make a lot of money in this game. The only way you would literally lose everything from poker is if you're not responsible or discipline with your gambling.

My dad is the same way "don't get sucked in, they just want your money".
OK pop, I prefer to have fun in life, and fun costs money ....save the advice for when it's an issue.

I started playing poker about three years ago. At that time my parents were gone, they died. But in general, I also share your point of view. I am convinced that poker is a game of skilled and experienced players. Luck is certainly important, but in my opinion, your skill and experience will be crucial.

I might have seen this movie. Is it from this kid and his friend at a tournament in Vegas? They actually play stud and the not so popular forms of poker? Well, there's also movies that represent poker as an outlaw thing and that doesn't help with the perspective less informed people might have from it. Gotta study and improve my play so that I can show that poker is worth it. Right?

Aw bruh, I'm sorry to read that. Yeah man, there's bad beats and the damn variance but if you're making the right decisions you'll succeed in the long run. And how's your skills after 3 years playing? You play as a hobby?

My parents did not agree at first that I play poker but over time they noticed that this did not affect my life, the truth is that it helped me pay for purchases and that kind of thing, today they agree that I play this wonderful sport

My family knows that I am a responsible player and that I only play in limits that I can afford. It doesn't make sense to play at tables that you can't afford and you're afraid of losing. You will play far too fearfully and will not be able to deliver your A-Game and you will not be able to take advantage of opportunities that open up. I think your family won't mind if you play poker for some money for fun. As long as you don't gamble away a large part of your salary, everything is fine. You can also organize a poker evening with your family. Then they can form their own opinion how much luck and how much skill the game matters. Maybe you win the most rounds and you can justify this with your strategy.

I don't remember exactly ... No, hold'em. There was a guy who said that he didn’t play in the casino games, but went straight to the poker room, I was talking about him.
These are feature films, yes, by which most people know about poker (except, probably, the USA, where poker is a popular sport, Canada and some other countries), where it is shown that poker is a game of luck.

When I explained this to my parents, they still laughed at me, like I could lose the house,

hahaha. But they understood everything. Mom said she might start playing too.

A friend of mine plays all day long, while not paying any attention to family affairs. That's probably what your parents are telling you) The fact that you are financially independent and pay the bills does not mean that you can. for example, do not throw out garbage, or do not walk your dog)) or just not to fulfill your mom's requests)

From experience i know that winning tourneys and making the money is something that you should not tell family. Keep it to yourself its your thing not theirs. Be an adult make the money and when you lose dont cry and make excuses......use it to fuel your poker desire to win it all.

Like, I'm a grown man. Have my job, my house, my stuff. The biggest thing to me is the misconception towards the sport you know? Its a great sport that's even leading me to a healthier lifestyle by me wanting to be in my best condition so I can take the best decisions. And by the way, there will be the day where poker will be profitable to a point that I might even make it my main means of income. I'm really investing efforts so it will be one day.

My family is aware that I play poker, and it has been more than 5 years now, and they have no objection whatsoever about it. They know that I am not an addicted gamer. I am also aware that a large part of people, perhaps their families, may be bothered that one played poker.

Most of the poker players go through these things with our relatives, they think that poker is a waste of time and money where we will end up becoming addicted because they relate it to a game of chance, but when you start to prove the opposite to What they say about poker over time and see that it generates more income than losses may change their prejudices or their perspective about poker.

Then you have to show him that poker is more a game of mental skill than chance and that with discipline and study you can get to live from poker and become a lifestyle or a job from the comfort of your home.

Life & Poker Have A Lot To Do With "Perspective"

People (including family) say and do things for "their" reasons, not yours ... thus, "their perspective" does not necessarily need (nor should it be) to be yours.

A significant part of being an adult, is actually having "your own perspective" which likely will entail many ups and downs, failures, research, trials and errors and experiences, etc. Your perspective will change over time and likely theirs may change as well.

It is all perspective.

Maybe I wasn't clear with what's really bugging me.

It's more related to the misconception about the game.

I'm still attentive to family affairs even tough I'm 36. Left parents house 28 years ago.

Parents opinions, even when you're a grandparent can still affect you from within. Even the ones that think its not like that still are. Even the ones that never met their parents. Psychology proves that every grown up has a deep foundational relationship with their progenitors.

I go to a shrink and she's specialized in family constellation by the way.

So yeah, just want them to know the truth about the sport. And maybe we could enjoy it together haha.

But I could facilitate the ups and downs, failures, research, trials and errors and experiences, etc. So their perspective would change and maybe we could have some fun together at the felt.

Man, I'm so glad I broke into posting here.

When I read your reply I remembered seeing families at the rail cheering for their relatives at the felt and maybe some of them were worried at first but now they're there cheering cause it was proven to them that the sport is worthy.

That surely can be a fulfilling experience.

Unfortunately, people still don't see poker as a sport or a job. Our parents have a very old thought that it is difficult for them to see poker as something serious and good for our future. Hopefully the day will come when we say that poker is a job or a sport like everyone else.
