I tend to disagree. You don't have to be a Negreanu or Boeri to make a moderate living playing poker. Go ahead and start out by playing freerolls, but they will never get you to where you want to be if making a living playing poker is your goal. Here's my story. I've built up small stakes on several sites with freerolls, less than $100 each, but the site I play the most on I bought in several years ago with $25. My wife thought it was a waste of money and laughed at me, totally expecting me to lose it. I played in $1 ring games and $1 SNGs until I built it up to $150. Took a long time, more than a year. Once I reached a 50:1 stake to buy-in ratio, I started playing in $3 dollar games. After a while, I deduced my temperament, patience level and experience were best suited for the triple up SNGs, so that's the game I decided to build my on-line expertise in. Once my stake reached $350, maybe about seven or eight months later, I advanced to the $7 triple up SNG games. Once I reached $750, in less than six months, I advanced to $15 triple up SNGs. I always maintained a minimum of a 50:1 stake to buy-in ratio. Over the next year I advanced to $25 and then $50 triple up SNGs. Since then, I've increased my stake to $15,000 for a 300:1 stake to buy-in ration and that's what I've maintained ever since. Except for when I hit bad beat losing streaks, and there have been a few even though I've always managed to grind my way back, I typically average $100 to $300 a day profit while playing three to six hours. I'm retired, so it's a nice supplement to my income and my wife is astounded at what I've done. She even checked all of our financial and bank records to verify I didn't sneak any more money onto the site other than the original $25 buy-in. I've even shown her the site records to prove my case. Granted, $100 to $300 a day isn't a substantially significant income, but it could be used to explore other avenues.
