Folding pocket aces turns out to be a smart move :)

mind you if hes going in 4/5 way he doesn't really want to be faced with a wet board for potentially alot of his money come the turn., he has to beat 8 cards with just one pair....

I dont blame him for folding you dont want to be risking a life changing amount of money in a multiway pot,
when he can get a better spot against one maybe 2 players

Given the specific nature of the Big Game format, I can understand this play and not wanting to try and tangle with 2 very good tournament pros post-flop. However I think I'd rather have seen him just spaz-3bet-squeeze-shove here instead of fold. It still takes away the post-flop decisions and I don't see 66 or 44 calling off in this spot. His squeeze could have netted him another $6k or whatever it was out of the hand. Quads are extremely rare. Getting PP's 3-way is less rare but still uncommon. AA is pretty rare too. Combining all that, you're talking about a bad fold in almost any other situation, short of a DON/satty bubble or maybe the bubble of a life-changing pay jump in a huge tourney when on a short stack.

Outside of this unique situation or those mentioned above, I have to disagree with you. I'm still amazed at how many people try to justify folding AA preflop.

The end-goal in poker is to get the chips in as a favorite. While multi-way AIPF with AA dilutes its equity and might make for an uncomfortable situation, it's still a favorite over any other hands, meaning you win more often than not. Which is exactly the sorts of decisions you should be making. You can't really wait for "a better spot" with AA because you only get it 1:220 hands on average.

Again, I get the fold on this particular situation, but this isn't your typical poker/tournament situation.

Ah, forgot about that aspect of this game. Then I even moreso agree with his fold.

There was a previous thread about this hand. I believe that the contestant/Loose Cannon who ended up having the most money on the table after 'x' number of hands also won a bunch of high-buyin tournament entries (or some PCA passport thing). Basically the contestant stood to win more by just folding.

Knowing that he had something more than that hand at stake, I would've done the same. Folding his way to the top. LOL!

This is old news , there was a post about this. Whatever ill explain, he stacked Phil Helmuth for 100k$ or sumfin and he was up about 130k$. Then he said he will fold everything till the end because he will get those 130k$ at the end of game and so he did. And no hes not a donk. Even donks know that A A is the best starting hand.

Discussed already: https://www.cardschat.com/forum/general-poker-13/folding-pocket-aces-turns-out-smart-229786/

In this case it was actually a smart play. The Big Game format is not like a regular game (for the Loose Cannon anyway). He had a lot more to lose than that one pot if he played the hand and lost. It's the same sort of thing with satellites and DONs on the bubble -- in these types of non-standard situations it can make sense to fold everything, even AA.

I never fold AA pre flop, but in this situation I think that in this program, sometimes it can be fold, in exceptional circumstances.

It was basically as much a career move as anything else. He's sitting there with a bunch of household names and shoots his mouth off that he's going to fold everything and voila...
His poker immortality is sealed, as witnessed by this being brought up again and again. He will now forever be known as "the guy who..."

Say thank you to YouTube Mr. Fishman

This is the hand that led to the folding of those pocket rockets. A donk? I think not... plus funny as hell! ;)

When the teacher called on the river, he had 13 outs
9 clubs, and 3 tens. So, using the rule of 2/4, his pot equity was 26%

Phil raised $15k to make the pot $30k
So, teacher's pot odds were 15 / 45 = 33%

1) He made a bad call, right?

2) Why does Phil say "dealer the river as any club and I would not have lost a penny!"
Yes, he would. Phil would still have 2 pair, but teacher would have flush. I don't get it.

Yes, he would. Phil would still have 2 pair, but teacher would have flush. I don't get it.

1) I can't speak for the teacher but I think he called the "turn" with implied odds in mind rather than immediate pot odds... that and perhaps a bit of saving face. But yeah, I do agree with you; it was mathwise a questionable call.

2) Phil was saying that if a club comes he doesn't lose "anymore money" than what was already in the pot. I think he said, "I don't lose another nickle".

I guess I'm kind of sick but just think Phil's tantrums are hilarious. And Perkins makes such a valid point.

crazy. but looking at these posts I guess there was much more at stake and better safe than sorry(lol I don't think that applies to aces). I found this thread because I just wanted to post my fold on pocket aces late position in micro cash game(was accidental, my 1 yr old son disconnected me): SOO SAD

Thanx for those Ladybugger... I've seen most of them but were worth the revisit to liven up the day. :D I'm not a Helmuth hater by a long shot. His achievements speak for themselves and his antics sure make for good TV poker. I just think it's shamefully hilarious to see a 6'7'' grown man act like an 8 year old. Wouldn't be great to put a camera on him and watch him play online?

amazing how this man fold aces pre-flop that does not know what's coming and ends incredible saving themselves a Phil Laak poker, but is unheard of one as a player trying to fold the best hand of poker believing that the will destroy and end knows victorious, because it prevents losing your chips ... surprising
