OK so I put in £120, played the Sunday million and finished 162nd and won $700. Not a bad start I suppose but need a big win so we will see what happens. I now have enough in my account to play higher stake tournaments and try for the big win. bb was 20k guy raises to 40k, I had 220k with AQ and I shoved hoping to at least collect 70k in blinds but the raiser had AA, sucks because A was on the flop and I would have had it all in either way. Horrible feeling to bust out so close to a big win but then I'm not 100% match fit atm. I'm getting there, I will take some positives from the game and hopefully feel a bit better

Going pro will be tough but you can do it. Just keep your job and take a leave of absent. Then try the grind to see how it pans out. don't just throw all your apples in one basket. This way if it does work out great.

Like my brother he tried it ,but he didn't have the luck with it but he still had a job after running into diffiticultey
Actually I'm doing that, thanks for the advice

Nice run but $700 only a couple of buy ins top 3 or final table regularly required to have realistic chance of going pro.
Your on the right track though nice result here well done wish you continued success:top:

Play behind the blind, and on the button, unless you have a top set in hand and when that happens just put in enough to push the all in junkies out and try to see your flop, if it works out then slam it in before some catches a straight or trips on ya..
Good Luck its a tough way to make bucks but patience and long hours are the keys, Also watch table close the program will switch from all low cards (straights, to High cards to flushes) if you are patient you will see the tables mood

I'm not sure which is worse... this ^ advice(?) on how to play or OP thinking you can go pro with a fiddy while playing one tourney per day.
David, not sure if you're aware of the kind of volume that the micro & low stakes players are putting in... I would guess that playing 30mtt's on a daily schedule wouldn't be unusual at all.
On '50' you'd be grinding out $1 games, needing to probably play 50 of them per day to earn 'maybe' $15/day 'in the longrun' (if you can run with an ROI of +30%).

Why would you start off with such a ridiulously small bankroll if actualy hoping to play for a living?

Good luck!
Maybe you can setup a ''CC going pro'' and get advice from Ryan, Jeff (and more?) in exchange for insight in the process and the startup?

And what do you think they'd say... I mean once they were able to stop laughing.
Surely you're joking though right? Did you read the OP's post closely? Not meaning or wanting to be a d1ck here but REALLY?
I'd suggest that OP take a look at JBGoode's post for a quick shot of reality.

I mentioned above that you'd need to play 50x $1 mtt on a bankroll of that size, to not go busto... but now I suppose playing $2's & $3's might be okay. Still... you'd need an insanely good ROI to earn enough even if playing 50mtt's per day (& it doesn't sound like you're really set up for the Volume thing if you're only playing a few per day (or one per day as you mentioned earlier in this thread). 50 mtt's per day, with an ROI of +20% would mean you'd be earning ~$30/day. That barely covers my grocery bill (what about Internet, Cable TV, a Car?, Insurance, Expenses, a place to live... you know.. like 'Rent' or a 'Mortgage' (hmm.. idk about 'mortgage'... fast forward to sitting down in mortgage broker's office
"Well I'm playin' the $2 180man's for now but I can feel a big tourney score comin' on the horizon"
M.B. "... And what do you have for a downpayment Mr. MacDonald?"
Poker Pro answers "Well I'd like to say just over 7 big ones... 7 billzzzz ... 7 LARGE Ones... but I think I need to keep part of that aside for my poker bankroll for now. I guess you could say 650 cuz I think I really only need 50 to get this thing going online"

$30/day 'if' you have an ROI of +20%... but if you have an ROI of -20% (Minus), then you'd be losing $30/day on average (in the longrun).

I hope I'm motivating you to go for it.... to get in your fittest of fit shape... fit shape of ALL TIME for crushing the tourneys. It'd be sweet for you to be posting here on this very thread in say 2025 from a penthouse suite in Vegas, lighting your joints with $1,000 bills just to say you did. And maybe I'd still be on here, grinding out an Uber post count, asking you for advice and maybe thanking you for throwing a special $100 freeroll for the folks here on CC (the ones on this very thread who'd been sticking around to watch the dream coming true! btw.. "what's the password?')

BRM is going to be huge for maintaining your pro status. Obviously understanding the game and making the correct plays will be where you make the money but if you can’t manage your money you’ll be looking for a job in no time. I wouldn’t be too focused on what books but what coaching sites would benefit you the most. YouTube has tons of coaching sites giving free info to see if they can further your game by coaching you. Yes I understand that the volume must be higher and it will, I am not 100% confident I can be pro in the future because I know how tough it can be so I haven't quit my job or anything but I do want to try and see how things go. The likelihood is that I will probably just go back to work and stop playing because I'm too scared to take the risk.

Thanks for the advice, I know you are probably right in what you say. Tom dwan started with 50 dollar bankroll and jungleman cates, it is possible to do it but I know I will loose one day or several days. Anyway I will play a tournament later this evening and see how I get on. Thanks

Umm... what does this ^ exactly mean.
I don't care if you've won 50 venom tickets... your advice above was terrible. (my guess is... 'alcohol is involved')

Advice: don't go pro. There is always plenty of time to play some serious tournaments without risking your other carrier and life. Remember, this is still gambling, it can be very addictive. It is very dangerous if you lose control.

So far today I have won $100 dollars, mostly at the cash tables not much luck on the tourneys but still profit. If I can win $100 each day I will be very happy [emoji4]

Advice

I recommend staying at your job while continuing to play poker. Keep track of your progress and if you're at the point where you can make the same or more and your job now, send it.

If you are only depositing 50, How much do you expect to withdraw every month as a paycheck for living expenses and ect.

Good luck

It sounds like you've come to your senses a bit and decided to grind online (and maybe live?) while keeping your job. I would advise to stay with this approach. I play live 30 or so hours a month and have a full time job, whatever time you have I would suggest you keep focusing on your game and building your bankroll. With access to online cash games you can sneak in sessions whenever you are free. As your bankroll and your game grows you can move up in stakes and after you have a sustained and substantial win rate the decision to go pro should almost make itself in my opinion.

I earn 2k per month so I would need to win this per month, I have won 800 so far in my first week so we will see what happens. I deposited a total of £120 to get me going.

Yeah I have 1 more week before I go back to work but I'm tempted not to go. If I get another good run on Sunday in Sunday millions I might chuck the job.

Don't quit your job. And 1 tournament a day online isn't going to cut it. Congrats on the $700 win but as others said, please keep your job or some form of separate income or have like 9-12 months of living expenses saved up.

As for the poker you'll need to show a good recorded record of success in the game AND be putting in wayyy more volume than 1 tourney a day online to even consider making a steady part time income from online poker.

Well done.
I guess in MTT's, there will be a statistical distribution of how deep you'll run.
From other threads I understand the problem in managing it, is that if you maximise the %itm's, you'll miss out on the big wins versus risking too many busts when trying (and failing) to maximise the big wins.
