How do you prevent poker from completely consuming your thoughts, hobbies, and relationships outside of the casino or online client?

I treat poker like a profession, not my identity. I set fixed playing hours, review sessions separately, and make time for family, fitness, and hobbies so I can stay mentally fresh and make better decisions at the table

That's the mindset that helps in the long run. Poker rewards discipline, but having a life outside the game keeps you focused and helps prevent burnout. Balance definitely leads to better decisions at the table.

I think the key is treating poker like a marathon, not a sprint. There were times I felt like I needed to grind every spare hour, but I found my results actually improved when I scheduled time away from the tables. A clear mind makes better decisions than a burned out one.

These days I try to have dedicated poker sessions and then completely disconnect. I exercise, spend time with family and friends, or just enjoy other hobbies. The game will still be there tomorrow. Long term consistency beats a few extra tired hours at the tables every time.

It's all about balance like everything else in life. When you realize that you are leaving important stuff aside because of something, let's say poker, then you need to weigh what is more important, that thing you dropped or poker.
I try to slice my attention and energy among stuff I need and like to do. I start with what I need than, if I have time, switch to stuff that I like to do. Eventually it works. I guess 😬

Setting clear boundaries helps a lot. I try to keep a regular schedule for playing and studying, and once that time is over, I switch to other hobbies or spend time with family and friends. Taking breaks also keeps me from burning out or obsessing over bad sessions. Poker is a big part of my life, but I don't want it to be my entire identity.

In my case, I have to prepare lunch before the half-day tournaments start, so I can share my time.

I try to keep clear boundaries between poker and the rest of my life. Once a session is over, I switch my attention to other interests, spend time with family and friends, and avoid analyzing every hand for the rest of the day. Having hobbies outside poker helps keep the game in perspective and prevents burnout. I enjoy improving as a player, but I never want poker to become my entire identity. Keeping that balance makes me play better and enjoy the game much more in the long run.
