yeah Pretty sure most of this software is banned on most large poker rooms and if you mutli table how on earth are you going to take time to look at the HUD????? I mean I guess if you multi table up to 5 tables it is possible to actually make the HUD work for you. I think anything beyond 5 tables and the HUD is pretty much useless cause you not going to have time to really look at anything except maybe the occasinal glance every now and then.

sigh...

No, they're not banned by any poker rooms. There is an extensive list of software tools that are banned at PS and FT, you can check them. So, as examples (and not to pick on any specific company), PT3 and HEM are listed as "allowed" on PokerStars, and PokerEdge (a HUD tool that uses a universal, datamined database) is listed as prohibited.

The HUD is actually pretty worthless UNLESS you multitable. There's no need for a HUD when you're single tabling (or 2 tabling etc.), since you can pay attention to everybody at the table and note what they're doing. If you're 8 tabling, it's much more difficult to watch every action that every player is making and take effective notes. A quick glance to see that player IMAREG is running 20/18 tells you that he's, on average, a TAG player, and that player IMAFISH is running 65/3 tells you that he's, on average, a fish who plays all kinds of hands preflop and doesn't raise non-premium hands. This takes only a glance, which is generally all that's necessary.

I have downloaded the poker tracker 3 trial version (free for 60 days), i have been using it for a few days and it has proved to me that it can be useful, and as slycbnew' said, especially when you have multiple tables, and i thought it was useful in MTTs coz it seemed to 'remember' players you have already met which is near impossible to do manually in a field of 1000+. Unfortunetly, the trial version does not allow you to create your own hud, so i could not customise to fit my needs/wants, this has totally put me off because the time it takes to look up the stats is often too long. I can understand that i would be able to do this if i purchased the full version, but im still swaying against using it, it is time consuming (compared to not using one) and to me its just all a bit too much, too much on the screen covering peoples stacks or when you move them they cover up the bet lol,and when i use the stats seriously for a session i find myself in too much of a panic to get the info i need and end up rushing my decision or actually timing out. You may say i must be a slow player but i assure you im not, im brill with maths and odds and usually make quick decisions, but when im 'checking stats' it take longer. I still realise the timing issue could be cut by creating my own hud but personally i prefer to just concentrate on the table and use my own info i have collected. I must also say that i will be keeping/using the software but only for the HH ( Hand History, which is exceptionally good) because this is useful to you no matter what. I believe its best to 'do it yourself' at 1 table (only 1), by concentrating and taking notice of everthing on the table, and maybe use the hud when multitabling to maximise your chance of getting the corect info about people.
I finish by saying that it does not suit all, i have done ok in poker without it and i hope to do better by using it for the HH, and possibly using the hud in a big MTT (but i would only turn it on when it was late stages), but the hud is just not for me.
If you havent yet, try it out! GL at the tables!

I used PokerTracker and I think it makes a difference. The difference between live and online is that online, people play many tables at one time, while live, people can only play 1. Poker Tracker is used to make a difference to those playing many tables, and can't keep track of 24 other people. At a live table, it is much easier to pick up reads, as you are watching only those people, and not three tables of people.

I think any one trying to succesfully make money playing poker has it or has tried it before. Im sure the number of people using softwares is so much higher then you beleieve. With all the free trials and free with deposits. I would say half the pokerpopulation if not more have something similar to pokertracker.

For anyone reading this thread, here's a tip; take a look at the number of posts from various people in this thread and compare the number of posts from sly and the thought that he's put into his post and compare with everyone else. That should give you a hint as to where to look for the best advice.

I'll add a couple things of my own; I used to have PokerTracker and switched to HoldEm Manager (HEM) when PT3 came out full of bugs and performance issues. I've never considered going back, and I think HEM has the bulk of the market these days.

For a beginner who is playing only one table I don't think PokerTracker or HEM is needed; just watch your opponents, but, pull up the hand history to see the mucked cards. PT and HEM with display these automatically for you after the hand so if you don't use these programs, pull up the hand history yourself to see. It was amazing to me when Stars came out with their replayer and people didn't even realize the mucked cards had always been available to see.

Either way, make notes on the way player play their hands. Then when you sit at a table with them again 3 days later you've got that information right away.

Once you start to get into playing multiple tables HEM or PT3 is a must-have, simply because you'll miss action, and even if you see the action, when you're playing 4 or more tables you won't remember who does what most often on which table.

If you don't use PT3/HEM you also won't understand in hand analysis areas what people mean when they say that their opponent was 27/9 which says a lot about how the opponent plays.

One of the best online players, BalugaWhale, doesn't use PT3 or HEM, but, he plays at such high buyin levels that the competition is very narrow so he has played every opponent in thousands of hands and doesn't feel the need to use it himself. Still, he understands what the stats mean so he's able to coach players who do use the programs.

Was reading the thread, stopped at bold and I want to ask a serious question. Does this mean that when I successfully bluff my opponent out of TPTK with a rag hand like 2-7, he can just pull the hand history from PT3 and HEM and know that I've been bluffing him?
If it does, well, that's one ****ed-up edge that shit player is using to get back at me! People are supposed to wonder the rest of the game if that fold they made was the correct one and whether I did hit or not and you're telling me that this program shows my hand? I hope not but if it does, just tell me how you think this is not cheating and how this improves my hand!(by making me dumber and relying on a program for reads rather than myself?).
And plz avoid the "I'm gonna say you're a noob cuz I want to have friends post"! I don't use programs but I don't have a problem with people using it to keep track of their stats, and I might 2 sometime. I just think it's very unfair and unprofessional if it does show your opponent's mucked card, that's all!

Does anyone know of a thread or site that explains everything about the statistics given and how to use them? I want to start using software to better my game, but I am confused on what software to start with and how exactly to analyze the information? Also, can these softwares run on a mac?

That is not true at all, you have pretty much full access, that being the main thing you can modify as you please.

It only works if you showed it, or went to a showdown. What it does is it automatically will show the showdown hand, without having to pull up the "last hand" button. If you bluff somebody off, it won't show unless you actually select "show hand".

You can't see hole cards with a hud that you couldn't see without a hud.

im not sure i understand what the extra step is? Is it checking your last hand? If it is, why would you need to if you were paying attention, if not could you explain a little plz?

I think you misunderstood, it only shows you their cards if they showed, bc that would mean the program new what the opponent had all along, hence cheating

Yes, checking the last hand. Cause in the example the guy with AQ mucked. So we didn't get to see what his cards were, he never showed them. So you would then need to go look at the last hand button, and pull up that screen to look. You don't need to worry about that with a PT3 and HEM. It's just one of the many small features it has. Also when you are 8+ tabling going and looking at the last hand can be a pain in the ass.

IcyBlueAce said:

Not true. I told Norm awhile back to download the PT3 trail and he did. Then when I went to set up his HUD for him it wouldn't let me. So the new free trials don't allow you to customize the HUD. But again, the HUD is such a small part of the program. The real benefit is analyzing your own stats and hands long after they have been played to find and plug leaks.

True and not true. If you have position on your opponent he has to turn over his cards and show. You on the other hand do not have to show your cards if you are beat. You can muck your cards.

However, if in a live game someone mucks, you can make them show, they technically have to. Doing this is highly frowned upon and can be taken as you're insinuating they are cheating. Online all the mucked hands are shown in the view last hand feature and in the HH.

Have never used one, but from what I have read, the Holdem Manager would be my choice. I am considering one right now.

Thats very weird then because I downloaded a newer trial just about 60ish days ago, its 3.0 something.

EDIT: Also a friend downloaded it just a little over a week ago, and was having trouble with it so I did PC to PC connection and was able to modify his HUD.

Hmm, weird. My encounter with it was about four of five months ago. So I don't know.

We are talking about the same thing right? I don't see why they wouldn't let people try out the HUD in a trial.. I actually clean out my PC registry keys so my trial always gets reset back to 60 lol.. but I have clearly modified the HUD here on the trial. . And ever since I've ever tried PT3 3-4ish months back on older versions I was still able to edit the HUD.

EDIT: Image is a little messed up (image lapped over another but that is besides the point)

Maybe try the Hold Em Manager trial? Of course it is only 15 days, but when I did it a few months ago you had full access.
