Hobby.

i use to but i got a thing about when i drink (on weekends) i think i can still play and i lose all my bank roll, but i use to keep 100 buy ins on my account and play full time and avg 500dollers a day

A better way to phrase the question would be, "how many people over 40 years old actually make a living STRICTLY playing poker?" The answer would be around ZERO. Young people think just because they have had a couple of good years, that they are destined for greatness in the game. But eventually you realize that once you get to a cerrtain skill level, you are not much better than a lot of other people sitting at your table. Add on to that, even though you play hands perfectly, it just takes one bad beat to put you on the rail. Skill is crucial to the game, but luck is still 80% of the game, and is nearly impossible to make enough money to live off of, considering all the time it takes just to accumulate those morsels.

4thandinches is right. get it when you're young and lucky. invest it and live off that and poker becomes an expensive hobby again.

ive been playing full time since about june this year. (and honestly, by full time, i mean whenever i want but its my sole income and pays my rent/bills/etc)

if there was a such a level, youd be making enough money in rakeback anyway. of course, im speaking for cash games, and judging by your use of the term 'put you on the rail', i assume youre referring to tournaments.
cash games allow for a bigger skill edge than tourneys, and theres plenty of people who can make a living from playing. ill be the first to admit that i cant do this forever though. im fortunate in that im young, and i dont really have any financial committments bar paying rent and bills. $250/400 a week is more than plenty for me

Since when are you luckier when you are younger? Why dont both of you ask a few of the grinders on here if they make money from poker.

4thandinches - if it takes one beat to put you on the rail... then you need a better BRM plan.

JCgrind it doesnt matter if you believe me or not i no for a fact and if anyone nos how to manage a bankroll then anyone can make good money , i mainly played the 8doller and 15doller 180 sng and the pay outs from them are $400 and $750 so aslong as u got a bankroll and cash in a few u will do fine and win one a day then it works out good money

so let me get this straight....

you cash $500 a day PROFIT. ie winning at least one and cashing good in at least one other to mitigate any lost buy ins every day you play.

then, with your sick high $3500/week, you manage to bust a roll in a night while youre drunk playing $8/$15 SnGs?

you couldnt run enough $100BI 180mans to bust that roll in a night.

$500 a day holy crap, that is some nice money. I watch some these players at my cardroom, they never leave and I know a few must use tis as a main income becasue they are the ones wanting the reciepts back for all the games. One person finally asked a player why he needs that and dealer had a great answer I never thought of. She said what happens if you win big on Dec 31st and have no recepts for the rest of the year, you can kiss most of that money goodbye.

So that's why you don't continue to sit at a table where you have little to no skill edge (cash). Obviously in a tourney you can't control that, but plenty of large-field MTT are filled with fish basically donating their buy-in with respect to their actual skill level -- which means you have an edge with respect to the total prize pool in relation to your buy-in. If you don't think you have a skill edge in the tourney you are playing relative to the prize pool and field, then you probably shouldn't be playing in that tourney.

You think the real pros are out there making their real money by trading stacks with one another? No, they are finding rich fish to fleece or using their tremendous skills to grind out enough hands to make their thin yet solid skill advantage over the pool of fish + avg or worse regs more lucrative by making SNE or 100% rakeback deals.

By the way, to answer OP's question, I play for fun and for side income.

A lot of people play poker as a source of income. I think you are very incorrect when you say that poker is 80% skill. There are fish at every level of poker so you can always move up and get better and still win. Even at high stakes poker there are going to be a lot of people that are not that good at the games.
