I need help to stop increasing stakes when losing

Hey all.

I have a safe bankroll. $200 and I play $5 heads up sng and do well in them. When I do go on a bad run I increase stakes to try to make up for what I lost. I need to stop increasing the stakes I play when I start losing. Have any of you got any tips or advice

Any help would be appericated

Not really much advice to give, you seem to have bankroll management down pretty well. It becomes just a mental thing: convince yourself that you got to that point using 5$ SNGs, so no need to increase stakes to simply get back to that point. You yourself say you are a proven winner, so whenever you're down...just believe you can do it. Most importantly, I suppose, is whenever you feel yourself tilting, immediately x out of FTP and turn off your computer (or as close to it as you can do). No need to play on tilt, never helped anyone

here is a plan get a sledge hammer hit your computer monitor until it turns dark and cracked at this point walk away and go to bed you won't think about playing when you are trying to sleep because you will remember your computer is broken

and if you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask

but seriously it is smart to take a break
find something like a video game you can play to keep you occupied well you calm down.

when i go on a bad run i come here and read articles and threads and i calms me down. it reminds me that every poker player can go on a bad run. thank u CC!

Well you play on FT, and if you can't find the discipline to just walk away after a bad beat, it might be a good idea to use the responsible gaming option under requests, use it to take forcefully take a 12 hour break, or even a day, two days, whatever.

play a lot of games at the same level win or lose...then it will give you a good idea of your rio..and if you are a winning or losing player....jumping around levels doesnt help your bankroll...yeah you get lucky here and there but wh3en u move u0p and lose to a bad beat...move up again and lose to another bad beat...ur in a tough spot....better to stay at the same level and improve your game AND BANKROLL before moving up

There was a good thread about this that is probably still hanging around. The best advice i heard in that was that when you do find yourself moving up, just think to yourself. I've grinded up for a week at $5 and now i'm gonna throw it away by playing $10. I'm gonna waste those 10 hours I played last week for nothing? That's a good mentality to have.

If you asked Yoda for advice, he'd probably tell you that the solution is within you, you're the only one that can switch off the comp when you feel yourself tilting and wanting to chase loses.

Chris Ferguson recommends going down a level instead of up when you're losing. His record is proof positive of what a good strategy that approach is. Countless other pros have said the same thing. I think when we play in desperation our game is affected negatively.

thats what i use to do but it doesn't help if you win either because when you start to lose at your normal stake you remember the time you went up and made your money back..... Bad beats hurt more when its more of your BR at risk. At the .02. 05 stakes i just LoL at the bad beats at $.50 $1 im ready to shoot someone LOL

You could always go and change the filter to only show the stakes you play and lower and that way you dont see the higher stakes, then just keep disipline to not uncheck the filter to go up.

I actually find when I am losing dropping stakes makes up my money faster.

I do that rarely when I get on tilt. Quitting or playing ultralow stakes and really playing like a maniac are both good options. The latter is a great way to inexpensively blow off steam.

Nobody can teach you not to play higher stakes you need self discipline. I used to duffer from the same problem and it took quiet a while and a lot of $$ to fix it.

Look at it this way you will never be a winning poker player if you dont practise good BRM. I think it is as important and maybe more important at smaller stakes than skill

Maybe if you really want to try something maybe read some books on self control so something similar

I think in the end you will learn like me but it will cost ya

It's tough to drop in stakes. You feel like you should be playing higher stakes and the pot sizes just don't excite you. It's normal. But you gotta do it. Sounds like you know what you gotta do so just suck it up and do it.

personally, my experiences, i stay the same or play low cash tables, if you're on a bad streak, you're on a bad streak, don't try to push and, because that will just make you lose money even faster, it'll pass and you wil lbe right back on your way to increasing your BR.
