I want to be a professional poker player. I'm not sure if it's for me. Any advice? Is it possible for a mere mortal like me to be a pro or is it just for people born with special talent for poker? How should I start?

I don't want to be a Professional...only 15% of poker players are winners long term.

Some Pro's that are very successful still have downswings. When you realize these downswings can last 50k hands, bit of a harsh reality.
I imagine these top Pro's have the resolve of that little old guy in Star Wars

It's not easy . You cannot start one day and next day become a pro . It demands many months of study , play at the games , with Brm , learn to use tools , read threads and books , you have to see it as a job . It will demand then a lot of your time for sure .

A professional player is not a title that can be inherited or bought for money !!! You will have to work hard on learning how to play poker and on finding and correcting your mistakes!!! But I am sure that hard work will give a positive result !!!

I want to make enough so I can retire through wise investments. If I became a professional poker player after I succeeded it would be for fun and not the money. I would donate half the prize every time I won and keep the other half for buy ins. I'd keep making money and giving it to the local charity's in the countries that I won (Help children, the elderly and homeless). It would be amazing to make a difference in many peoples lives and not just my own. But I do understand life is short and it important to consider your own happiness but doing that for others would make me happy, and give me a reason to wake up every morning. Rather then be out partying every night.

I tried to become a professional for several years, but it's a very hard job, I do not give up, watch streams, analyze, try to correct my mistakes, it's hard, but I'm patient and believe in my success

It will take lots a time and effort physically and mentally. Give it a try for a year or 2 while on the job to measure your skill and dedication. Good Luck if you plan to push it.

How long have you been playing poker? What types of poker do you play? Have you had much success?

Being a long-term winning player, even at low stakes, is more difficult than most recreational players probably realise.

I will have enough set aside personally to retire from retail investments. That's if I can ever win anything substantial online. When my investments do well I can start playing high stakes tourneys globally at casino's direct entry (small portion I set aside). But I wont play any further if I lose my original bankroll. Regardless if I'm free and have nothing to worry about. I would want to take a ant hill and turn it into a gold mine... give away what I can afford to lose and still have a good life style. Those would be my goals anyway.

A mere mortal can do it. The main discipline is patience. As an option, go to a poker school, they will teach you everything for a rollback of profit.

If you have access to both, try both, and then you'll know which one is best for you. I don't recommend one or the other, as each person has a learning mode, so I recommend testing both.

The 30-day course here on the forum is a good way to start.
