¿What other game do you think would have taken its place as a symbol of risk and intelligence?

Intellectual games utilize mental abilities to achieve victory or for leisure purposes. These games develop intellect and erudition. Intellectual games are common in mass media, such as television and radio, where participants are typically required to answer questions from various areas of life, with the winner receiving prizes.Sometimes I solve puzzles.

If poker had never existed, I think chess would’ve remained the dominant symbol of pure intelligence, but stock trading or options markets might’ve taken the crown as the real symbol of risk + decision-making under uncertainty.
Chess shows skill with zero luck — perfect information, perfect logic.
Markets, on the other hand, combine incomplete information, psychology, risk management, and long-term edge — very similar to poker, just with bigger egos and worse bankroll discipline 😅
That’s why poker is special: it sits perfectly between chess and Wall Street.
Too much skill for gamblers, too much variance for purists — and just enough chaos to reward those who can think, adapt, and control themselves.
Curious what others think: game, sport, or real-world arena?

I think backgammon would’ve had a much bigger spotlight. It already mixes skill + dice variance + long-term edge, but poker kind of stole its thunder over the years. Strong players still crush weak ones, but the randomness keeps it exciting and accessible. Honestly, if poker never blew up, backgammon could’ve been the game people point to when talking about calculated risk

A different card related gambling game...

People will gamble over anything, if it's not cards it's dice, if it's not dice it's a coin if it's not a coin it's what team is going to win today's game.

There's also the stock market, very similar so far as needing to understand risk and reward. (Also psychology can be a big help in both investing and poker.)

I agree that I would probably try and find a game that fit a similar profile tho, needing intelligence skill and risk to outperform your opponents.

Chess with real stakes, or even financial trading. Poker just became the best symbol for making smart decisions when you don’t have all the information.

If poker did not exist, someone would surely have invented it.
Instead of poker, blackjack could be an alternative.

If poker didn't exist, chess would be its substitute, played by a large number of players.

If poker had never existed, chess combined with some form of wagering or backgammon would likely have taken its place as the main symbol of risk and intelligence. Chess already represents deep strategy, psychology, and long-term planning, but lacks uncertainty, while backgammon includes both skill and luck, making it closer to poker’s balance of decision-making under variance. Games like bridge could also fit, as they reward memory, logic, and partnership strategy, but backgammon in particular feels like the closest natural substitute.

If poker had never existed, I think backgammon could have become the main symbol of risk and intelligence.
It’s no coincidence that Dan Harrington started with backgammon many core concepts of poker already exist there: expected value thinking, probabilities, positional advantage, and long-term decision making.
Dice introduce variance, but skill dominates over time. In that sense, backgammon is one of the closest intellectual ancestors of poker.

If not poker, then some other card game could replace it. There are quite a few good options, so finding a good card game would not be a problem. I know a few that could replace poker, such as ‘deberz’ or ‘preferans’.

Chess or if there were freeroll casino games they could have taken substituted for poker if the game did not exist.

I don't know which came first, with whom or poker, if poker hadn't existed, we would play with whom instead, if not other games such as chess.

If poker had never existed, another game would’ve stepped into that cultural spotlight where risk meets brains.
Chess would be the cleanest candidate pure strategy, long-term thinking, and zero luck. It already screams intelligence, and with a bit more gambling culture wrapped around it, it could’ve become the go-to symbol of calculated risk.
But honestly? Backgammon might’ve taken the crown. It mixes strategy and chance, has fast momentum swings, and already lives comfortably in high-stakes settings. It feels very “poker-adjacent” in spirit.
So yeah chess for the mind, backgammon for the thrill. Poker just happened to blend both

Another card game, another dice game, another checkers game, another board game. I think there are options.

Maybe Omaha could replace poker, it's hard to think of another game that could replace poker, if it weren't for poker we would never have met CC and we would never have met people from different parts of the world.

I think backgammon or bridge would’ve been the closest substitutes. Chess shows intelligence, but without uncertainty. Poker’s strength is making good decisions with incomplete information, and those two games come closest to that mix of skill, risk, and psychology.

In fact, poker hasn't always existed. To fully answer that question, I believe we would first need to research the evolution of games that preceded poker before the 18th century.

Probably Chinese Checkers. It looks simple on the surface, but good players think several moves ahead, manage risk, and adapt to what others are doing. That balance of planning and timing could easily make it a symbol of intelligence and calculated risk.

Chess would probably be my go to game, but it lacks the gamble. No variance, no bluffing fate, no bankroll swings. Great for pure strategy, not for risk.

I guess chess would be a lot more fun if moving a knight meant risking a few dollars, haha.

Omaha is still a subtype of poker, like Texas Hold'em.
I think instead of poker, there could be another card game, of which there are hundreds, that would best meet the players' requirements. There are actually many such card games, but we only know a few.
