If you could only own one poker book . . .

I've been looking into buying some poker books. I just purchased my first 2 (Doyle's Super System 2, and The Theory of Poker).

My question is this....

If you could only own one poker book, which one would you own and why (this should make for a very interesting and informative thread).

NOTE: PLEASE STICK TO LISTING ONLY ONE BOOK AND REASON WHY. THINK ABOUT IT AND POST THE BEST ONE.

In my mind the best OVERALL poker book is David Sklansky's Theory of Poker, which you already own.

There are much better books that focus on individual games, but the Theory of Poker covers all of the concepts of poker in general, not just a certain game.

If you play poker, The Theory of Poker is the one must-have book in my mind.

Chicubs has a point about Sklansky's Theory of Poker being the best all-encompassing book as far as general poker knowledge. Some of his writing, however, can be a little bit of a tough read for a really green player. To best answer this question, you need to consider what you plan on doing with your poker knowledge. Tournaments or cash games? What kind of games, Omaha, holdem, stud, or another? There are books out there for each discipline that are specialty books designed specifically for whatever your taste in game selection is and will be much more in-depth and informative than anything that hits the surface and main points of many disciplines.

I am gonna go out on on a limb and say Winning at Low Limit Holdem by Lee Jones. It was the first book I purchased and helped my game immensely.

Of course, I was in the dark at the time. I played poker but not holdem.

I guess I should classify this as a great book for beginnners. I do think you will end up refining your game on your own as I have.

out of curiousity, anyone have a reccomendation for getting better at holdem no limit tournies? this is the format i tend to play most...so im wondering what the best investment for me is!

...and I can't wait to receive it. It shipped yesterday and so I'll probably get it tomorrow since it is coming Priority Mail. I've heard from many people that the Theory Of Poker is a "must own". The owner of the place that I ordered it from said he's read it over several times and still gets stuff out of it to better his game.

Harrington on Holdem parts I & II are supposedly the difinitive works (haha) on tournament holdem. And if anyone knows he would be one of em'.

On a side note I was able to insert the phrase "difinitive works" in a sentence about poker literature. Very high-brow if I do say so myself. Cue the theme to The Jeffersons.

Harrington on Hold'em are the books I saw the biggest improvement on.

Looks like I have more books to buy (hehe). While we're on the subject, does anybody know the best place to buy this stuff at the lowest price? Any favorite online book dealers etc. that you want to share?

I'm gonna say Harrington on Hold'em 1 and 2 are must haves. Especially if you play in a lot of tournaments. Poker books are great, but some of them tell you the same stuff. These are awesome books and for people looking to improve their games should give these a read.

Power Poker for sure.. it is a whole course of instruction with different chapters by different authors. Theory of Poker is great, but only for "graduate" studies of the game. If you could only have one book you should not start with the most advanced one.
